The madwifi-ng driver is used for the atheros chipsets. This driver does not support any USB atheros devices. However, Atheros acquired Zydas which makes USB chipsets (zd1211 and zd1211b). Atheros has renamed this chipset to AR5007UG. The AR5007UG chipset is NOT supported by the madwifi-ng driver, but it is recommended, because its one of the cheapest chips (about 5, 6$ on eBay) supported by aircrack-ng and offers reliable and stable operation for wireless connectivity. Starting with 2.6.24, AR5007UG(zd1211/zd1211b) can be used with zd1211rw. Madwifi-ng is deprecated and now most supported cards by madwifi-ng should be supported by ath5k or ath9k.

Cards containing the Realtek RTL8187L chipset work quite well and is recommended. The driver patch for this chipset has been continuously improved and quite good at this point in time. The Alfa AWUS036H is a very popular card with this chipset and it performs well the aircrack-ng suite. This chipset is not to be confused with the RTL8187B, which is nowhere near as tested as RTL8187L.

At the time, that Win32 software was almost non-existent for my friend and me. Even today, wireless network penetration software is still in the Linux stage. The main software suite, Aircrack-ng, is just barely supported in Windows. When I tried the Windows port, it was slow, it did not accept my drivers, and it crashed numerous times. Basically, the Win32 aircrack-ng suite was pretty unusable and unstable.

I downloaded the aircrack vmware premade larger of two choices image and used Netgear WG111v2 and it worked with packet in jection using the rtl8180 driver. Been successful in cracking

wep with it. Got it at Best Buy. Somewhere on the web I found it uses the RT73 and it works. Used vmware 6.

Hi hacker not cracker, I know this blog page is from a while back now but I was wondering if you could clarify a few things for me. I have a RT73 USB chipset and I have located _downloads.php which apparently has the appropriate drivers for my card to run packet sniffing/injection under windows, but I am failing to make sense of the list of drivers.

Also, have you discovered a more direct method of getting an RT73 working in windows? I find I am running around the whole internet just trying to locate a laymans guide to getting an RT73 working in windows with no luck so far so it would be good to get some clarification on whether I am barking up the wrong tree or not!

I have Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with a Realtek RTL8187SE Driver, RTL8180/RTL8185 chipset with aircrack-ng 1.1 and every time i enter "airmon-ng start wlan0". It says "monitor mode enabled" instead of "monitor mode enabled on mon0". I checked ifconfig to see if it made another interface, but all I got was "wlan0", "lo", and "eth0". How can I fix this?

Are these drivers included working, if not why are they in the kernel??? (sorry kinda sick of this usb dongle rtl8187 issue) I got it working in ubuntu 8.04.1 after a hassle, but I had the advantage having gnome default. Archlinux's pacman can't fetch gnome/kde/.. obviously without internet connectivity.

Wel, in the windows environment the drivers are working as they should, stable and good power. Issues you says... I began to use this dongle piece of crap with ubuntu 7.10 x64 and I had to search for a while till I bumped into the wiki page from aircrack, concerning this chipset. It worked however power wasn't as it was like on the other side. Ubuntu LTS/8.10 the same thing excerpt some line had to be adjusted because it was a wrong link. But eventually it works not so powerful. Archlinux isn't working at the moment, that's what I basically doing here, tryin to figure it out...

It is actually on channel 12, I'll adjust it to 10. And no I didn't try netcfg2, because I thought its the same with cmdline meth, but I'll give it a shot. I guess back to the frontline I mean commandline.

channel to 10 no effect. And after setting up a netcfg profile with settings with wep encryption... It seemed doing it stuff but eventually the dhcp timed out ofcours. Dhcp is properly configured within the router although. Its this bloody driver I think. You sad you had the same motherbord and thus the same chipset usb dongle rtl8187(L, I think). Do you use this hardware and how did you get it working?
