I am the co-director of the IDE's MA program together with Mike Boozer.
My research is in international trade with focus on developing countries. I use quantitative models to study contrasting patterns of bilateral trade flows, prices, and factor usage between developed and developing countries. Using firm-level data from developing countries, I also study how international trade shapes the incentives for firms to upgrade technologies and the ensuing effects in the labor market. The novel mechanisms that my work highlights include the positive effect of import competition on firms' investments in differentiation, and the role of domestic input linkages in magnifying the effect of trade on quality upgrading and on the demand for skilled labor.
