The Role of Parents in Youth Volleyball: A Guide

Hello volleyball parents,

I'm Dr. Darren Cannell, head coach at the Canadian Elite Academy. As we nurture our young athletes' growth and love for volleyball, your role as parents is equally significant. Here's how you can contribute to your child's journey in the sport.

Tip 1: Be Supportive

First and foremost, offer emotional support. Encourage your child, whether they win or lose. Let them know that it's okay to make mistakes and that what matters most is their effort and love for the game.

Tip 2: Foster Independence

Encourage your child to take responsibility for their sport involvement. Let them pack their own gear, keep track of practice schedules, and communicate with their coaches. This fosters independence and self-reliance.

Tip 3: Understand the Game

Learn about volleyball so you can better understand your child's experiences. Familiarize yourself with the rules, positions, and techniques. This will help you appreciate your child's performance and progress and make your conversations about volleyball more meaningful.

Tip 4: Respect the Coach's Role

Remember that the coach is the one responsible for instructing the team. Avoid contradicting the coach's instructions or undermining their authority. If you have concerns or suggestions, communicate them to the coach privately and respectfully.

Tip 5: Practice Good Sportsmanship

Model positive behavior and good sportsmanship. Be respectful to coaches, referees, and players (including those on the opposing team). Your child will likely adopt the same attitudes.

Tip 6: Encourage Balanced Living

Remind your child that while volleyball is an important part of their life, it's not everything. Encourage balance. This means ensuring your child has time for other activities they enjoy, as well as for rest and relaxation.

Tip 7: Be There

Attend games and practices whenever you can. Your presence shows your child that you support their interests and appreciate their efforts.

Remember, your role as a volleyball parent is crucial in shaping your child's sports experience. Be supportive, promote independence, understand the game, respect the coach, model good sportsmanship, encourage balance, and most importantly, be there for them. Your child's volleyball journey is just as much an adventure for you as it is for them.

Stay supportive, keep learning, and enjoy the game.
