Darren Cannell  

Canadian Elite Academy Head Coach

Short Bio

Darren has coached club volleyball for two decades. Was the president of the Saskatchewan Volleyball Association for ten years and a Volleyball Canada Director for the same. He has coached a provincial team, CANAM teams, and national teams.

Darren played 5 years university volleyball in Ontario (nominated all Ontario), senior club player, beach and on the master’s national team.

Short Bio

I have played volleyball for the past five years, attending multiple camps and playing on a variety of teams. I've played numerous positions with Libero being my most trained (and most enjoyed) position. I have experience in both beach and indoor giving me a vital insight into different aspects and strategies of the game.

This is my first year coaching, and I'm very excited to work with the next generation of players.

Katie Young

Short Bio

I’ve been playing competitive volleyball for the last 7 years. Starting with JCVC and ending with Lighting Volleyball Club, coached by Chie Imamura. I’ve played competitive beach volleyball for the past 4 years coached by, Michele McKeown, Darren Cannell and VOGO.

Throughout school, I played for the senior team between grades 8-12 and have attended several Canadian Elite Academy sessions within that time.

I’ve been coaching volleyball collectively for the past 3 years. Being an intern coach for several Canadian Elite Academy sessions, both indoor and outdoor. As well as assistant coached high school senior boys and junior girls teams.

Short Bio

I've played competitive club volleyball for four years. I began playing with JCVC and ended my last club season with the Saskatoon Lightning Volleyball Club. I also trained with the Elite Academy through the School Day

In 2021, I was an intern coach at a CVVC summer camp. I am looking forward to furthering my experience and knowledge about coaching being an intern coach this year at Making the Cut camp.

Olivia Anderson

Short Bio

Olivia has been playing volleyball for seven years and has an extensive high school, club and beach volleyball background. She has gained knowledge from many talented players and coaches and has grown a love for the sport. This is Olivia's first year coaching with the Academy, and she is excited to help others improve their skills and play some volleyball.

Paige Friesen  

Intern Coach

Short Bio

I've been playing club volleyball for six years. I have had the opportunity to play on several different teams with many amazing coaches who have made me the player I am today. This past indoor season I played as both left side and libero, getting to practice the range of skills that come with both of these positions. I am also playing my fourth season of beach volleyball, training with VOGO, where I will be attending nationals in Toronto this summer.

I am so grateful to have joined the Academy's coaching staff this summer! I was able to coach a talented group of about 30 athletes in July where we practiced everything from passing, to serving, to calling the ball. It was so great to see how much everyone had improved after just 8 hours of playing together!
