Hello again, volleyball superstars,
Dr. Darren Cannell here, your coach from the Canadian Elite Academy. I've been thrilled to see your continuous progress and dedication to the game. Today, let's take a deeper dive into spiking, specifically focusing on how to spike harder. I'll provide tips and at-home activities to help you amplify your spike power.
To spike harder, you need to focus on three main components: your approach, arm swing, and wrist snap. When combined correctly, these can produce a powerful, high-speed spike.
A strong approach is the first step to a powerful spike. It's about using momentum, and the faster you go, the more force you can generate.
Home Drill: Speed Approach Practice your three-step or four-step approach at home, focusing on speed and momentum. As you get comfortable with faster approaches, try to maintain control and directionality.
Your arm swing is like a whip. You need to draw your elbow back high and swing forward as hard as you can, creating a swift and powerful arm movement.
Home Drill: Resistance Swing Use a light dumbbell or resistance band and practice your arm swing. The added resistance will strengthen your arm and shoulder muscles, contributing to a more potent swing.
The wrist snap, the final movement in your swing, contributes to both the power and direction of your spike. A forceful snap can give your spike extra speed and help it dive downwards after crossing the net.
Home Drill: Wall Snap Stand a few feet from a wall, toss the ball up, and spike it against the wall. Concentrate on snapping your wrist forcefully upon contact.
The point of contact between your hand and the ball is also crucial for a powerful spike. You want to hit the ball with the heel of your palm, not your fingers.
Home Drill: Palm Strike Practice hitting a ball against a wall using the heel of your palm. This will help you get a feel for the correct contact point.
A full follow-through can add force to your spike. Your hand should follow the direction you want the ball to go, extending completely through the swing.
Home Drill: Full Swing Practice your full swing without a ball. Ensure that your hand is fully extending and following through in the direction you intend to spike.
Remember, spiking harder involves a combination of technique, speed, and strength. Work on these drills consistently, and you'll notice your spikes getting more powerful.
Stay safe, keep practicing, and always stretch before and after each session. I'm looking forward to seeing your powerful spikes in action in the new season!
