Hello volleyball superstars,
It's Dr. Darren Cannell, your coach from the Canadian Elite Academy. I'm always delighted by your determination to keep improving. Today, we're focusing on a crucial position in the game: the middle hitter. I'll break down the key aspects of this role and share some at-home drills to help you develop your skills as a middle hitter.
The middle hitter, also known as the middle blocker, is a vital player on the team, contributing significantly on offense and defense. Speed, timing, and quick decision-making are key attributes for middle hitters.
A middle hitter needs to be ready to execute quick attacks. This requires good communication with the setter and a fast approach.
Home Drill: Fast Feet Practice quick footwork at home. Use a ladder or markers to create a course and work on speed and precision.
As a middle hitter, you'll be responsible for blocking attacks from the opposite team. You must be able to read the setter and anticipate the direction of the attack.
Home Drill: Jump Squats These are excellent for improving your vertical leap and speed for blocking. Squat down then explode upwards, reaching as high as you can.
A good middle hitter can transition quickly from offense to defense and vice versa. This requires speed, agility, and good court awareness.
Home Drill: Shadow Play Practice moving quickly from a hitting to a blocking position and back again. Use a mirror to observe and correct your form.
Timing is crucial in the middle hitter position, both for attacking and blocking. You need to be able to react quickly to the setter's touch and the attacker's movements.
Home Drill: Wall Hits Stand a few feet from a wall, throw the ball against it, and practice timing your jump to 'block' or 'hit' the ball when it rebounds.
Slide attacks can be a deadly weapon for middle hitters. This involves a broad, sweeping approach from the middle to the right side of the court, hitting the ball while in motion.
Home Drill: Slide Practice Without a ball, practice your slide footwork at home. Focus on speed and fluidity of movement.
Remember, being a middle hitter requires excellent physical skills, court awareness, and the ability to make split-second decisions. Practice these drills regularly, and you'll see great improvement in your skills as a middle hitter.
Stay safe, keep practicing, and don't forget to stretch before and after each session. I'm eager to see you dominate as a middle hitter in the new season!
