Hello volleyball superstars,
Dr. Darren Cannell here, your coach from the Canadian Elite Academy. Your dedication to the game never ceases to impress! Today, we'll focus on a unique and critical position on the court: the libero. I'll share some tips and at-home drills to help you develop your skills in this role.
The libero is the defensive specialist of the team, known for their quickness, excellent passing, and digging skills. This position requires agility, precision, and a deep understanding of the game.
As a libero, you'll often be tasked with handling the first contact on a serve receive or a hard-driven attack.
Home Drill: Wall Passes Practice passing against a wall at home. Focus on accuracy and consistency, aiming to hit the same spot every time.
Being an excellent digger means keeping the ball alive when the other team attacks.
Home Drill: Dig Drills Have someone throw balls at different angles and speeds. Your goal is to control the ball and direct it upward.
The libero often handles the most challenging serves due to their passing skills.
Home Drill: Serve Receive Simulation Have someone serve (or toss) balls at you while you practice your serve receive footwork and platform positioning.
Liberos should always be ready to cover their hitters, meaning they position themselves to dig up any balls blocked by the opposing team.
Home Drill: Reaction Drills Set up a few different objects around you. Have someone call out which one to move toward, and practice reacting quickly.
As a libero, you're the defensive leader. It's important to communicate effectively with your teammates about positioning, opponent tendencies, and more.
Home Drill: Mirror and Call Practice your defensive moves in front of a mirror and imagine different game situations. Call out imaginary plays and positions as you would in a game.
Remember, being a great libero requires excellent technical skills, quick decision-making, and leadership abilities. Continue practicing these drills, and you'll see your performance as a libero enhance significantly.
Stay safe, keep practicing, and don't forget to stretch before and after each session. I'm excited to see your growth as a libero in the new season!
Cheers, Dr. Darren Cannell Head Coach, Canadian Elite Academy
