In this unit you will learn about the hardware that makes up a computer.
Hardware is the items you can touch. Hardware can be inside or outside the computer.
Hardware that is added to a device to increase what it can do is known as a PERIPHERAL.
What hardware have you used to log on this lesson?
Hardware can be built-in or attached with a cable,
Some hardware devices are for putting data into a computer. These are called INPUT devices.
Others are for outputting data and these are called OUTPUT devices.
Create 2 slides in your Computing Powerpoint.
Label one - INPUT DEVICES and one OUTPUT DEVICES
Collect a range of images of relevant devices (use the activities above to remind you of what are input devices and what are output devices)
Arrange them on the correct slide and label them,
Inside a computer is a MOTHERBOARD. This is a circut board that all other devices connect to.
The other main parts of hardware inside the computer are:
the CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT (CPU) - the brain of the computer
the RAM - Random Access Memory - which stores apps when they are running
the HARD DRIVE - this is the long-term storage. It saves all the apps and data like music and photos even when the computer is turned off
PORTS - these are where other devices can be plugged into. Such as a headphone jack or a USB port for plugging in a mouse or USB stick
the GRAPHICS and SOUND cards - these are so we can see images on screen and hear sounds.
Add a slide to your Computing PowerPoint showing an image and a description of the parts inside a computer.
Focus on the 4 main parts - motherboard, CPU, RAM and hard drive.
