Data centres aka server farms store all the data businesses and individuals store online. They need 24/7 power plus, as they generate enormous amounts of heat, they need energy and water to cool them.
•Special design of data centres (hot-aisle / cold-aisle) to increase cooling efficiency
•More energy efficient storage technologies (graphene)
•Ration usage by introducing a tax on amount of digital activity consumed.
•Use 'green' sources of energy such as solar, hydro-electric and wind.
The video shows how Facebook and Microsoft are tackling this issue by siting server farms near the Arctic AND on the sea floor to take advatage of the cooling properties of the Arctic air and the ocean.
Technology can also help the environment:
Smart meters and other intelligent technology help us to reduce energy use
Smart cars and traffic monitoring reduce the pollution into the atmosphere from cars
Smart heating and air-conditioning systems can be more effective in their use of energy
The development of new 'greener' energy generation such as wind, solar, and more efficient batteries
Online tools such as video calls reduce the need for people to travel into offices or fly overseas for meetings.
