Logical shifts are used on unsigned binary numbers. ie. 8 bits numbers within the range 0-255.
Left shift will multiply.
Right shift will divide.
Each place shifted multiplies or divides by a power of 2. 1 shift = multiply or divide by 2. 2 places shifted = multiply/divide by 4. 3 places shifted = multiply/divide by 8.
Arithmetic shifts are used on SIGNED binary numbers. ie. Two's Complement binary numbers within the range -128 to +127.
The Most Significant Bit (MSB) is the one on the far left. This holds the sign.
If the MSB is 1, the number is negative, with a value of -128. If the MSB is 0, the number is positive.
Left shifting is identical to logical shifts - fill gaps with zeroes.
Right shifting is different because the sign must be kept.
When right shifting, the gaps are filled with copies of the MSB.
