You must expect to have to draw one of these design documents during the exam.
Remember to ANNOTATE wireframes and visualisations to explain your choices.
Flowchart advice: Know your shapes. Remember to always start with a START shape (rounded rectangle) and END with a rounded rectangle. The flowchart will usually have inputs and outputs (PARALLELOGRAMS) and decisions - Yes/No questions - that go in the DIAMOND shape and have 2 arrows from them. Something that happens 'in the background' is a process and is shown in the RECTANGLE. Remember that the shapes are joined with ARROWS NOT LINES.
If you forget the shapes, draw the flowchart anyway as you will get marks for having the steps in the correct order.
A Chinese restaurants accepts food orders for delivery. through its app and by phone.
Food will only be prepared once it is confirmed that the order has been paid for.
Once the food has been prepared, it is given to a delivery driver for delivery.
Do this ON PAPER.
This is just an example. As long as your interpretation fits the scenario and is in a sensible order you will receive marks.
There can be little difference between these 2 in the exam because you won't have the time or the tools to make a high-fidelity visualisation. Remember to use placeholders for text, buttons, images and other media in a wireframe.
The key is annotation to explain your choices. ASK YOURSELF: Could someone else use this to make the product?
Think carefully about what elements will be on the screen/page and the usual position/layout of these.
Don't forget the navigation if an app or web page.
You should show the size and position of elements using boxes.
Annotate to explain size and position and choices. Eg. more important elements will be larger and more prominent.
The Chinese restaurant wants a touchscreen kiosk in its restaurant so people have an additional method of placing an order. Create a visualisation diagram to show the layout of the home screen.
Do this ON PAPER.
Remember to give enough detail that someone else could use it to make the home screen.
Make sure to include:
- a central node containing the theme, topic or task
- at least 2 other nodes. These can usually be Content, Layout and Branding (to include fonts, colours, accessibility).
- at least sub nodes from the other nodes. For Content nodes, be specific to the task.
It can help to plan out the product either as a list or as a visualisation BEFORE mind mapping.
The Chinese restaurant is developing a website and app so that regular users can create an account, place repeat orders more easily and gain loyalty points.
Create a mind map for the log in screen for the app/website.
Do this ON PAPER.
Remember to give enough detail that someone else could use it to make a visualisation.
