Some Family and Child Safety Tips that will Keep Your Family Safe ____________________________________________________________________

  • Set up the family computer in an open area of your home or apartment like a living area or kitchen.
  • Keep your passwords secret, if you need to write down your password, keep it in a safe place and where you the parent or caregiver only know about.
  • Do not give your passwords to your children or strangers, and do not give your children any administrative access. Parents set your children's user names and passwords and set them where they cannot be changed except by the parent or caregiver.
  • Do not allow your children to download any programs or apps without your permission, and pay close attention to the games your children play online.
  • Carefully monitor your children's social media (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, and other sites, and keep a record of their user names and passwords on a frequent basis.
  • When your child or children meet someone on social media for the first time insist you go with them so you can meet their new friend.
  • According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation cyber-crime cost individuals and businesses over $13 billion per year in lost assets, incomes, and downtime. Do not click on any email links of unsolicited emails, and carefully watch your web searches for any problems. When in doubt simply delete the email.
  • According to National Center of Missing and Exploited Children there are FBI entries of 465,676 missing children in 2016 alone. Also according to the CyberTipline there are 8.2 million reports of related things such as ;
  • Apparent child sexual abuse images.
  • Online enticement, including “sextortion.”
  • Child sex trafficking.
  • Child sexual molestation.
  • Keep track of your children's smartphone activity to assure your children are communicating with persons you the parent or caregiver know about and are comfortable with.
  • Do not allow your children to have any webcam devices in their bedrooms that can be hacked from the outside that strangers can spy on your children. Closely monitor your family's webcam use to prevent strangers from accessing it and spying on your family.
  • When meeting someone you have met online for the first time meet in a public place and take a trusted friend with you if it is during the evening hours. When in a bar or club with a new date, do not leave food or drink unattended.
  • Do not be afraid to ask your local police department for any additional information on cyber-security and child internet safety.
  • In case of emergency dial 911 or your local emergency number if you are a victim of a cyber-crime and always keep a copy of your local police report.
  • Never give out personal information on unsecured sites or over the phone. Always look for a padlock and an address that begins with https:// . Immediately close your browser if you are directed to a site address that begins with http://.
