A member of Caritas International, the worldwide network of Catholic humanitarian agencies, CRS provides relief in emergencies and helps people in the developing world break the cycle of poverty through community-based, sustainable development initiatives as well as Peacebuilding. Assistance is based solely on need, not race, creed or nationality. Catholic Relief Services is headquartered in the Posner Building in Baltimore, Maryland, while operating numerous field offices on five continents. CRS has approximately 5,000 employees around the world. The agency is governed by a board of directors consisting of 13 clergy (most of them bishops) and 10 lay people.[3]

In September 2017, CRS responded to the devastating damage caused by Hurricane Maria, a Category 5 storm that hit several Caribbean islands, killing more than 3,000 people and causing more than US$91 billion in damage. Hurricane Maria, which hit the region less than two weeks after Hurricane Irma, made landfall on the island of Dominica with winds registered up to 160 mph. In the immediate aftermath, together with Caritas partners, CRS distributed 7,000 food and hygiene kits to families in Cuba, and more than 1,700 kits to families in the Dominican Republic. As the U.S. Catholic Church's international humanitarian agency, CRS focused on relief efforts in the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Antilles, while its sister agency, Catholic Charities, directed aid to those affected in the United States and its territories, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Catholic Relief Services Collection supports Catholic Church organizations that carry out international relief and solidarity efforts. Programs include relief and resettlement for victims of persecution, war, and natural disasters; development projects to improve living conditions for the poor; legal and support services for poor immigrants; peace and reconciliation work for people suffering from violence; and advocacy on behalf of the powerless.

With the aim of taking this solution globally, Changing the Way We Care will first work with governments, community leaders, and orphanage staff in seven developing countries to identify the best family-based option for each child, provide families with parenting skills and services, and help policymakers craft better policies that support family-based care. Changing the Way We Care will then use evidence from these seven demonstration countries to influence other countries, regional political bodies and funders to build global momentum and to redirect donations and resources to serve vulnerable children in a way that supports family-based care.

CRS programs are funded through donations, however, the organization had difficulty differentiating whether it was using its own cash or donor money for expenditures. CRS also had limited visibility between US operations and ground-level country operations, which hindered its ability to manage resources and deliver relief missions.

Catholic Relief Services  is the international relief agency of the Catholic Church providing humanitarian relief and development assistance in more than 100 countries. This collection contains the records of the War Relief Services, an agency of the National Catholic Welfare Conference, spanning the years 1944-1971. During World War II and its immediate aftermath, the War Relief Services and cooperating indigenous agencies brought relief and welfare services to war torn countries in Europe and Asia. In 1945, the War Relief Services joined with other Catholic social service agencies and ethnic organization to form the National Catholic Resettlement Council (NCRC). Its task was to augment the national plan for the resettlement of displaced persons in the United States which would be implemented by Diocesan Immigration Councils. In 1955, the War Relief Services changed its name to the Catholic Relief Services.

As the official international agency of the Catholic Church in the United States, we work with the local Church and partners to create a world in which people live as one human family. CRS' relief and development work is accomplished through many programs, including:

"The poorest families, the most vulnerable, are the ones paying the hardest consequences of climate change," she said. "They are the ones using less resources without basic services, but they are the ones experiencing losing everything every time an event originated by climate change happens."

In April 2005, Cabrini College became the first institution of higher education in the United States to sign a memorandum of understanding with Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the official international relief and development agency of the U.S. Catholic community.

The CRS Student Ambassadors chapter at Notre Dame engages the campus community to act on global emergencies and injustices. Ambassadors organize awareness campaigns, prayer services, candlelight vigils, faith-sharing groups, legislative advocacy, and fundraising campaigns for global emergencies as well as participate in CRS programs such as CRS Rice Bowl, CRS Fair Trade and CRS Helping Hands. National and regional conferences and trainings are held each year to bring chapters together and form a national community of students committed to advancing global justice, peace and human dignity.

CRS Rice Bowl is the Lenten program that invites Catholics to pray with their families and faith communities; fast in solidarity with those who hunger; learn about our global community and the challenges of poverty overseas; and give sacrificial contributions to those in need. It is conducted in Catholic parishes and schools in the Sacramento Diocese as well as dioceses throughout the United States. Seventy five percent of the funds raised by this program are used by CRS for international relief and development projects, and twenty five percent is kept locally, part of which is distributed within the diocese in the form of grants for hunger and poverty abatement programs.

Whether left out of government aid or ill-supplied with Spanish-language educational materials, undocumented and legal immigrants are at risk of missing out on services made available amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Our programs address the health care needs of individuals who require better access to health services. They include medical clinics, dental clinics, behavioral health services and counseling services. Primary care visits to the doctor, mental health counseling and access to medical specialists for unique health challenges are a few of our services.

A core service agency with the District of Columbia, Behavior Health Services is a mental health clinic that provides services to anyone who has been approved for treatment through the DC Department of Behavioral Health. We provide mental health education, medication and ongoing case-management services.

The health care network connects uninsured and low-income residents with medical and dental specialty services. Patients must have a referral from a primary care clinic, fall below 250 percent of the federal poverty level for their household, and reside within The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington.

In collaboration with professional and educational dental organizations, the Mission of Mercy is a free dental clinic for adults. Provided by volunteer dental professionals, services include cleanings, x-rays, fillings, extractions and medical screening.
