I'm New

As a student coming in to the band programs at Carroll, there can be quite a few questions about band. Please view the information below to find answers to many of these questions. Still have more questions? Please contact Mr. Hassell.

Here is a short video of the Carroll "Charger Pride" Marching Band experience!

JOINING BAND - Make sure you get it on your Class Schedule

TO BE IN MARCHING BAND...there is no "try out" for marching band instrumentalists, just sign up for the correct class! Color Guard & Percussion do have try outs in late April/early May (see Charms calendar on home page).

Percussion Students: Sign up for Instrumental Ensemble 1st Semester. For 2nd Semester, sign up for Intermediate Band if Freshman/Sophomore, Advanced Band if Junior/Senior

Brass/Woodwind: Freshmen sign up for Intermediate (Symphonic) Semester 1 and 2 (you may be asked to move to Advanced Band -- aka: Wind Ensemble -- for Semester 2).

OTHER BANDS/OPTIONS...

Jazz Band 1 : Currently, this is the only jazz class that meets as a regular school class. You must try out (audition) for this class. Auditions are typically in March. Mr. Hassell will have the audition requirements, so be on the look out for those. There are Jazz Band 2, Jazz Band 3, and jazz combos available too. These are after-school groups that start up toward the end of 1st Semester.

•What if I want to be in color guard first semester, but play my instrument in band 2nd semester? Take Intermediate Band 2nd semester. Go to the color guard auditions in late April/early May to try out. There is no color guard class.

•What if I am in percussion for marching band, but I play a wind instrument in concert band? Take Instrumental Ensemble 1st Semester, and Intermediate (or Advanced Concert Band) 2nd Semester

•What if I don't want to march at all, but still want to be in a band? We encourage everyone to try marching band at least one year. Almost everyone who does absolutely loves it. But there is a band that does not march first semester. Sign up for Concert Band (no march).

Marching Band Rehearsals and Band Camp Info

Please see the schedule of rehearsals and performances on the Marching Band page. Keep an eye on the Charms calendar (home page of this website) for dates and times.

For all practices, make sure you have these items:

Your instrument. Your music in a 3-ring notebook. Drill book (this will be explained during practice). Big jug of Ice Water. Sunscreen (Hats are good too!) Lip balm with SPF. Bug spray for evening rehearsals. Gym shoes -- no sandals! Dress for the weather. A sack lunch for all-day camp days.

The first days of rehearsals will start in the band room. Enter door 40 (enter the parking lot at the stoplight off Carroll Rd to get there). Sometimes practice will begin at the Band Practice field. This is located off Carroll Rd to the west of the school behind the tennis courts. Your director will tell you where to meet. If a student drives to practice, they MUST park in the student parking lot and enter door 13. They are not to park in the lot adjacent to door 40 at any time.

During rehearsals when there is a meal break you can either: pack a meal, have a parent drop off a meal for you, or order a meal from the boosters. There are no refrigerators or microwaves available for use. There will be order forms for fast food meals that you can pay for and the boosters will deliver for your meal breaks. These order forms come out about every month during marching band season and will be on the front page of this website when it is time to order.
