This is a playlist of songs that got me through this awful year.

January: “Happy New Year”- Future Teens (Breakup Season) and "you should be sad"- Halsey (Manic)
After seeing Future Teens open for The Wonder Years in October 2019 I started to listen to them more. Which was very convenient, because no other song than this one described how my 2020 started. My car was totaled three days into the new year (don’t worry, it wasn’t my fault and I was fine). Looking back maybe that was an omen about how this year would be...
However, a good thing that came in January was Halsey’s third album Manic. I loved “you should be sad” since I had first heard it and played it even more once the album dropped.
February: “Fake Blood”- Heart Attack Man (Fake Blood) and "Washington Square Park (acoustic)"- The Wonder Years (Burst & Decay vol. II)
I began to get into Heart Attack Man this year as well. This song has been in fairly constant rotation on my radio show and for good reason, it's a great song.
This was another song I played a lot as I started my radio show earlier this year. Even when I play it now I can picture myself back in the studio surrounded by friends. It’s a bittersweet memory.

March: “Evaporate”- A Will Away (Soup) and “We Look Like Lightning”- The Wonder Years (Sister Cities)
The lines “she’d like to hear that it’s over/ She’s love to know I’m okay” resonated with me in terms of the pandemic. Back when I thought this would end fairly quick. Yet here we are, still waiting to hear it’s over.
Again, this one is based off lyrics. The lines “I’m half awake, I know it’s wrong/ but I swear to God it’s almost Christmas” also resonated with me. So much had changed. A lot didn’t feel real. And most things were a little scary. The surreal feeling has worn off, but the song is still comforting.
April: “Learned Behavior”- Future Teens (Hard Feelings)
The amount of times I played this song, you’d think I had just discovered it. This song also became very comforting to me. Especially when my original plans of how I thought my college experience would go slowly fell apart.
May: “Hard Times”- Paramore (After Laughter)
This year has definetly mirrored the emotions found on After Laughter. Things in my state at least seemed to be improving, but we weren’t in the clear yet. And other parts of the country proceeded to get worse. However, I tried to not let it get me down.

June: “God Help The Outcasts”- The Hunchback of Notre Dame (The Hunchback of Notre Dame Studio Cast Recording)
I got into Broadway over quarantine and started with this song. Granted I already knew it, I had gravitated toward it after discovering it two years ago. Still it was a good place to start and let me find other musicals and their stories.
July: “the 1”- Taylor Swift (Folklore)
Well, Taylor Swift released an album about two days after I got broken up with. Talk about convenient. If you couldn’t tell by the song choice, the break up wasn’t my idea and I definitely turned to this song. Also it’s just one of my favorites off the album. It’s funny, no one know this album was coming but I think it’s something we all needed. I definitely did.
August: “Young”- Grayscale (Nella Vita)
I had started a new (dead-end) job and was kind of just feeling...off. So much had changed. I expected more to change as I inched closer to my next semester. This song helped me feel better about all the uncertainty.
September: “Souvenir”- Sunsleeper (You Can Miss Something And Not Want It Back)
I always thought “You can miss something and not want it back” was a clever line, but man does it hit different when it relates to you. I started reflecting on the people I knew and grew a part from. I realized it might not be as bad as it seemed. Also it’s funny, I picked this song last year too!
October: “Never Saw it Coming”- Tigers Jaw (Tigers Jaw)
Sometimes people you thought were your friends aren’t. But the good thing was I could learn from it, and I hope I have.

November: “Last Year”- Best Coast (The Only Place)
I started to get into Best Coast near the end of this year, and I think this is my most played song from them. It’s true, “what a day this year has been.”

December: “If We Make It Through December”- Phoebe Bridgers (If We Make It Through December EP) and “Some Kind of Disaster”= All Time Low (Wake Up, Sunshine)
I feel like I need to apologize for relating most of these songs to the pandemic, but that’s pretty much the only thing that happened this year. This song is one of hope but also a little fear to me. Things are starting to go in the wrong direction numbers wise, but a vaccine is coming. We just have to...make it through December. (Too soon?)
This year has been full of surprises, and becoming an All Time Low fan is definitely one of them. I was never into ATL, and I’m going to be honest. I barely know the classics. But a friend recommended I play this song on my radio show and I really like it! Right now I”m still just starting off with Wake Up, Sunshine so we’ll see what happens.
