2019 was a great year for music, both in new releases and new discoveries. The songs on this playlist are the ones that had the biggest impact on me this year.
(All pictures in this post except the ones for January and June are my own)
January: Waterparks- "Sleep Alone" (Entertainment)
After getting into them in late 2018, it was no surprise I kept them on rotation at the start of this year. I still remember “Sleep Alone” coming up on shuffle when I was hanging out with a friend over break and how we both sang along in the car.
February: No Stranger- "Great Grey Towers" (In Tangible Company) and The Wolrd Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Afraid To Die- "January 10th, 2014" (Harmlessness)
Back in February I was able to see TWIABP live for the very first time. To this day, I still think of it as a great show. The band No Stranger opened up the entire thing, and I loved their set. I definitely recommend checking them out. The World Is A Beautiful Place… killed it. I was able to see one of my favorite songs “January 10, 2014” live. The passion David Bello (vocals) has live is amazing.
March: A Will Away- "Long Exposure" (Soup)
Ahh March, that was when I went to see A Will Away track songs that are now on their ep Soup! The first night I was there they mostly worked on what is now known as “Long Exposure.” I loved this song from the moment I first heard it and y’all have no idea how many times I’d sing the chorus to myself wondering when it would finally be released.
April: Tigers Jaw- "Never Saw It Coming" (Tigers Jaw) and Balance and Composure- "When I Come Undone" (The Things We Think We're Missing)
This was the most bittersweet show I’ve ever been to. I finally got to see Balance and Composure live, but it would be the only time since they have broken up. However, the show was anything but sad. There was such a community atmosphere, and that was heard when the whole room sang “Never Saw It Coming” by Tigers Jaw as loud as they could.
May: Boston Manor- "Flowers In Your Dustbin" (Welcome to the Neighbourhood), Movements- "Under the Gun" (Feel Something) | iDKHOW- "Absinthe" (1981 Extended Play) | The 1975- "The Sound" (I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It)| Frank Iero and the Future Violents- A New Day's Coming (Barriers).
I had quite a busy May. It started on the 9th when I saw Movements. I fell in love with Boston Manor and saw Movements on their first headline tour. Two days later I saw iDKHOW. It was my second timing seeing them, but my first time seeing them headline. They put on a wonderful show.
Then I did back to back shows at the end of the month. The first one was The 1975. To this day I have never found the same feeling that I got when Matty Healy (vocals) told us all to jump during the end of “The Sound.” The very next day I got to meet & see Frank Iero and the Future Violents. The start of the day wasn’t the best, but it ended up being a really great day, and I credit that all to the band and the fans I met throughout the night.
June: Halsey- "Nightmare" (Single)
After being released in mid-May, I played it a lot in June. I truly love how powerful this song is; It’s an anthem.
July: CHVRCHES- "Bury It" (Every Open Eye) and Sad Summer Fest; The Wonder Years- "I Just Want To Sell Out My Funeral" (The Greatest Generation) The Maine- "Another Night On Mars" (American Candy), State Champs- "Lightning" (Living Proof).
At the beginning of the month I saw CHVRCHES. They are a band you need to see live. They’re electric. Less than a week later I found myself at Sad Summer Festival watching (and meeting) my favorite bands. While there I was able to see The Maine and State Champs live for the second time and I was finally able to see The Wonder Years for the first time ever! It was probably my favorite part of the whole Summer and I hope I can go again if it comes back in 2020.
August: Taylor Swift- "The Man" (Lover)
In late August Taylor Swift’s new album Lover had finally come out and it became one of my most played albums. Now since it’s release I’ve fell in love with a lot of the songs, but the very first one I fell in love with was “The Man.” I love the message and what it stands for.
September: Slaughter Beach, Dog- "Map of the Stars" (Safe And Also No Fear) & Mat Kerekes- "Spider Silk" (Ruby).
In September I was able to interview and see Slaughter Beach, Dog perform. Safe And Also No Fear is one of my favorite albums that came out this year and getting to hear some of the songs live was amazing.
Two days later I was back at the same venue to see Mat Kerekes perform. I had found out about Kerekes earlier this year when his new album Ruby came out. I am so glad I got to see him perform live.
October: Grayscale- "If I Ever See You Again"(Adornment), Twenty One Pilots- "Chlorine" (Trench), Future Teens- "Frequent Crier" (Breakup Season) and The Wonder Years- "The Orange Grove" (Sister Cities).
October was a fairly busy month for me. I started the first week of the month off by meeting and getting to see Grayscale live! I came back with some bruises but it was worth it.
A little more than a week later I saw Twenty One Pilots. They put on an amazing show, as always
Then exactly 10 days later I saw The Wonder Years for their Halloween show. I also got to see Future Teens (or rather Carly Rae Jepsen) open the night. Future Teens are another one of my favorite discoveries this year.
November: Small Talks- "Teeth" (A Conversation Between Us).
Small Talks was constantly on in November. I’ve kept tabs on them since they went on tour with Can’t Swim back in February and as soon as I knew they were touring with A Will Away I had to make sure I knew all the lyrics. They’ve become one of my favorite discoveries of 2019, and if I’ve said it once I’ll say it again if you haven’t listened to Small Talks before, you should start to.
December: Boston Manor- "Stick Up" (Welcome to the Neighbourhood), Heart Attack Man: "Fake Blood" (Fake Blood), Sunsleeper- "Souvenier" (You Can Miss Something & Not Want It Back) and A Will Away- "Well-Adjusted" (Here Again).
What a way to end the year. I want to start off by saying I should’ve got into Heart Attack Man sooner. I loved their set when they opened for Boston Manor.
After falling in love with Boston Manor back in May I dived right into their music. One of my favorite songs off of Welcome to the Neighbourhood, as well as my most played is “Stick Up.” I just love it so much.
"Souvenir" has become one of my favorite songs of the year. Sunsleeper has also become a band I love and it was so nice getting to see them live before Christmas.
And finally, A Will Away. If I’m being honest, I wanted to put “The Masochist’s Daughter” for their spot. I mean, come on. They played it for the first time in six years, it was iconic. But it’s not on Spotify, so "Well- Adjusted" will take its place instead. It’s one of my favorite songs off of Here Again, so I was beyond ecstatic when I learned they would definitely be playing it.
And that was my year through songs, I think it was a pretty good year, and I hoped you enjoyed looking back at it too.
