I was lucky enough to get to talk to Amy Hoffman, who does vocals and plays guitar for Future Teens, about the bands' recent endevors.
It’s been about 6 months since Breakup Season came out. How has the response been? Has it been better than you expected?
Amy Hoffman: "The response has been incredible! Seeing folks connect to and enjoy something we are so proud of and poured so much of ourselves into is surreal."
What inspired the Sensitive Sessions?
Hoffman: "The Sensitive Sessions are an attempt to recapture the quiet moments that the songs from Breakup Season were created in. It felt fitting to build something new from the original arrangements, and we had a lot of fun reimagining them to highlight the songs’ lyrics and inherent sensitivity."
How was touring with The Wonder Years back in October during their Halloween shows? I see touring with them led to inspiration for the “Born to Stay” video.
Hoffman: "Oh my gosh, tour was a dream come true. The Wonder Years is one of our favorite bands, both as musicians and as people, and we’ve learned so much from that band and their crew. Thankful doesn’t begin to cover how we feel about touring with them, same goes for the other bands we met on that run, Homesafe and Trash Boat. AND we got to be Carly Rae Jepsen for eight nights? Unreal. We’re going to remember those shows forever."
"Breakup Season" shows a variety of emotions and phases of relationships, are the way the songs ordered intentional or did it just come together that way?
Hoffman: "We didn’t realize it at the time, but the song order is almost the same order they were written. We wrote Breakup Season in the midst of the aches, pains, and endings that we were writing about, and it just happened to shake out into a fairly linear narrative of those endings - a really nice accident!"
Personally, your music has resonated with and helped me, is that something you think about when writing? How the songs will impact listeners?
Hoffman: "First of all, thanks! That’s amazing to hear. We definitely think about whether what we’re working on is relatable, but the priority to us is that we’re writing honest songs that we love and are proud of. A lot of our writing process is Daniel and me telling the stories behind our ideas and asking each other hard questions to get to the heart of what we are saying and feeling. Writing this record helped us process the things we were going through, and we’re really thankful it has been able to help others do the same."
Breakup Season is avaliable now.
