For ice fishing, the REESE Towpower 63155 is my top choice because its spacious mesh floor and raised rails offer the perfect balance of stability and drainage for cold-weather gear. If you need more volume and a folding design that locks tight without rattling, the Carpod Cargo Carrier Hitch stands out as the runner-up with its massive side walls and welded frame.
• REESE Towpower 63155 — best for ice fishing gear and wet equipment; pick this if you need a large, open platform that drains water quickly and keeps heavy loads stable on a 1-1/4 inch receiver.
• Carpod Cargo Carrier Hitch — best for maximum capacity and secure containment; pick this if you want a one-piece welded frame with tall sidewalls that prevent shifting and folds flat for easy garage storage.
• APEX CCB-F6020-DLX — best for long, bulky items like skis or extended rods; pick this if you need a 60-inch length to carry oversized gear that won't fit in standard carriers.
• StowAway Max Hitch Cargo — best for protecting delicate electronics and valuables from the elements; pick this if you require an enclosed box with a swingaway feature to access your rear hatch without unloading.
• Elevate Folding Hitch Cargo — best for loading heavy machinery or coolers with ease; pick this if you need a built-in ramp to roll gear into the basket rather than lifting it over high sides.
• CURT Manufacturing 18101 — best for lighter loads on smaller vehicles; pick this if you want a compact, lightweight steel basket that fits easily on Class II receivers without adding excessive tongue weight.
• LARIN SRC-500 — best for solo installation and storage convenience; pick this if you need a 500-lb capacity carrier that is light enough for one person to lift onto and off the hitch alone.
The REESE Towpower 63155 Rambler is designed specifically for those who need a robust, open-air solution for transporting bulky items. It features a spacious 48-inch by 20-inch cargo platform that provides ample room for camping gear, coolers, and luggage. The heavy-duty mesh base is a standout feature for winter users, as it allows dirt, snow melt, and debris to wash straight through, keeping your cargo dry and your vehicle clean.
This carrier is ideal for the serious ice fisherman who needs to haul multiple tackle boxes, a portable shelter, and extra fuel cans. The 300-pound weight capacity ensures you can load up heavily without worrying about structural failure, while the 5.5-inch side rails provide necessary containment to stop items from sliding during sharp turns or bumpy road conditions. Its black powder-coat finish offers excellent corrosion resistance, which is essential when dealing with road salt and freezing temperatures.
However, the main trade-off is that it does not fold, meaning you will need a dedicated space in your garage or shed when not in use. Additionally, the 1-1/4 inch receiver size limits its compatibility with some trucks that only have 2-inch hitches unless you use an adapter, though this smaller shank often reduces rattle issues compared to larger tubes. For someone prioritizing durability and drainage over storage convenience, this unit remains a solid foundation for any towing setup.
When I look at the Carpod Cargo Carrier Hitch, I see a piece of engineering that prioritizes rigidity and security above all else. It distinguishes itself with a one-piece welded galvanized frame, eliminating the loose bolts that often cause rattling and wear over time. The construction includes high 22-inch sidewalls that fold down for loading but lock firmly into place to keep your gear contained, effectively turning the carrier into a secure cage for your belongings.
This product is perfect for families or groups heading out for a weekend trip who need to transport a significant amount of equipment without strapping everything down individually. The 450-pound weight capacity and 14 cubic feet of volume are substantial, allowing you to pile in sleeping bags, tools, and food supplies with confidence. Because the tubing is thicker than many Asian-standard competitors, it sits snugly in a 2-inch receiver without needing additional anti-rattle devices, simplifying the installation process significantly.
The primary downside is the sheer size and weight of the unit when fully assembled. Furthermore, while the sidewalls fold, the overall footprint remains large, requiring careful planning for storage in tighter garages. If you value a permanent, rock-solid mount that minimizes maintenance and maximizes security, the Carpod is a compelling option.

The APEX CCB-F6020-DLX takes a different approach by focusing entirely on length and versatility for long items. Measuring 60 inches long, this basket is specifically tailored for gear that exceeds standard dimensions, such as fishing rods, skis, or long-handled tools. The expanded metal design allows for excellent airflow and drainage, ensuring that moisture doesn't get trapped underneath your cargo, which is a common issue with solid-floor carriers.
I find this carrier particularly useful for anglers who need to transport long poles or specialized equipment that cannot be broken down easily. The 500-pound weight capacity indicates a very sturdy build, capable of handling heavy loads without flexing. When not in use, the ability to fold the basket up against the vehicle saves a considerable amount of ground space, making it a practical choice for those with limited driveway room.
Despite these advantages, the low profile height of 6.5 inches means that smaller items could potentially shift or fall out if not secured properly with straps or nets. It also requires a Class III or IV 2-inch receiver, so it may not fit on smaller crossovers or sedans with lower-rated hitches. While the length is a major benefit for specific loads, it can create a longer overhang that might affect clearance angles on steep driveways or ramps.
Unlike the open baskets discussed previously, the StowAway Max Hitch Cargo offers a fully enclosed experience with a swingaway frame. This molded polymer box is constructed from impact-resistant material similar to whitewater kayaks, providing superior protection against rain, snow, and road debris. The 16 cubic feet of enclosed space keeps your gear safe from theft and the elements, while the swingaway mechanism allows you to pivot the entire box away from the vehicle to access your trunk or tailgate without removing the carrier.
This is the go-to choice for travelers who need to protect sensitive electronics, expensive cameras, or documents from the harsh weather typical of ice fishing trips. The inclusion of LED taillights and a keyed locking latch adds layers of safety and security that open baskets simply cannot match. Being made in the USA speaks to a commitment to quality and longevity, ensuring the unit withstands years of heavy use.
The trade-off here is the significant weight and bulk. Additionally, the enclosed nature means you cannot simply dump out mud or snow; you must manually empty the contents. If your priority is absolute protection and accessibility, this box wins, but if you need something lightweight or open for ventilation, this is likely too heavy and cumbersome.
The TMS 500 stands out due to its extruded, anodized aluminum construction, which offers a distinct advantage in rust resistance compared to steel alternatives. This material choice makes it exceptionally durable in environments where road salt and moisture are constant threats. With a 500-pound capacity for Class 3 receivers, it provides immense strength while remaining lighter than comparable steel models, reducing the strain on your vehicle's suspension.
It is an excellent choice for those who want a no-nonsense, heavy-duty carrier that will last for decades without corroding. The silver finish not only looks modern but also reflects heat better than black finishes, which can be beneficial in summer months. The assembly process is straightforward, and the 49-inch length provides a generous platform for various types of cargo.
However, the lack of sidewalls beyond the 8-inch height means that smaller items must be secured tightly to prevent them from falling out during transit. Also, while aluminum is resistant to rust, it can still be susceptible to scratches and cosmetic wear if dragged across rough surfaces. If you prioritize longevity and weight savings over the rugged aesthetic of steel, the TMS 500 is a reliable contender.
The Elevate Folding Hitch Cargo brings a unique feature to the table: an included 60-inch loading ramp. This addition transforms the user experience, especially when dealing with heavy coolers, wheelbarrows, or ATVs. The ramp folds flat into the basket when not in use, saving space and maintaining a sleek profile. The open slat construction allows water and mud to pass through freely, preventing the buildup of grime that can plague solid floors.
I recommend this for users who regularly haul heavy equipment that is difficult to lift over high barriers. The 500-pound capacity ensures that even the heaviest loads can be moved safely. The anti-rattle device included in the package is a thoughtful touch that addresses a common annoyance with hitch-mounted carriers, ensuring a quiet ride.
This makes installation and removal a two-person job for most people, unlike the lighter options that can be handled solo. Additionally, the ramp mechanism adds complexity to the design, meaning there are more moving parts that could potentially fail or require maintenance over time.
The CURT Manufacturing 18101 is a classic, no-frills basket designed for simplicity and ease of use. Constructed from heavy-duty tubular steel, it features a mesh base that is easy to clean and six-inch tall sides that provide adequate containment for most standard loads. Its lightweight design makes it one of the easier units to install and remove, appealing to drivers who want to swap their carrier in and out based on immediate needs.
This carrier is well-suited for lighter hauling tasks, such as carrying groceries, sports equipment, or small camping gear. The universal design fits most ATV cargo racks and standard receivers, offering flexibility across different vehicle types. The black finish helps hide minor scuffs and dirt, keeping the carrier looking presentable after a few trips.
The limitation lies in its lower weight capacity and smaller footprint compared to full-size models. It is not intended for heavy-duty industrial use or transporting extremely large items. If you need to move significant weight or oversized gear, this unit may feel underpowered. However, for casual users who value convenience and a compact design, the CURT offers a solid, budget-friendly entry point.
The LARIN SRC-500 challenges the notion that high-capacity carriers must be heavy and difficult to handle. This lightweight design allows a single person to install, remove, and store the carrier effortlessly, freeing up tongue weight for actual cargo rather than the carrier itself.
It is an ideal solution for SUV owners or individuals with smaller hitches who need maximum utility without compromising vehicle performance. The compact 46-inch by 21-footprint prevents overhang issues while still offering enough room for luggage, coolers, and camping essentials. The 6-inch rails on all four sides ensure that gear stays put, even on uneven terrain.
While the weight is a major selling point, the smaller dimensions mean it cannot accommodate the longest fishing rods or skis without angling them carefully. Additionally, the simple bolt-together assembly, while quick, requires attention to detail to ensure all connections are tight before hitting the road. If you need a high-capacity carrier that you can manage alone, the LARIN is hard to beat.
We compared published specs and features across all listed products to determine their suitability for ice fishing and general hauling. The ranking is our independent editorial opinion based on design, capacity, and usability; no brand paid for placement.
A 1-1/4 inch receiver is smaller and typically found on cars and smaller SUVs, supporting less weight, while a 2-inch receiver is standard for trucks and larger SUVs, accommodating heavier loads and larger carriers.
Even with high sides, using a cargo net or tie-down straps is recommended to prevent smaller items from shifting or bouncing out during sudden stops or rough roads.
While possible, leaving a basket on year-round exposes it to unnecessary wear and tear; removing it when not in use extends its lifespan and prevents interference with rear access.
