If you’re a senior, chances are you’re working on your college application(s) now or you will be very soon. If you’re a junior, maybe this is something you’re already beginning to think about. Either way, it is a stressful process that requires time and dedication. I have submitted one early action application and already feel like I am going to implode. To make this process just a bit easier for you, here are a few tips I have learned while applying to college for the first time and tips that I’ll be using for my upcoming applications.
Plan ahead. It is important to plan out exactly what you need to do for each college before the deadline. This will make you less overwhelmed as well as provide you some organization, and a plan.
Make sure to actually answer the essay prompt. Often colleges require at least one essay to be written as a part of their application. This is considered one of the most crucial components of and believe it or not, some people actually fail to directly answer the prompt. Make sure you actually make sure to answer the question.
You don’t need to have gone through a major life experience to write your common app essay. What’s important is being able to write about any experience, small or big, that conveys exactly who you are. Whether it be an obstacle you overcame, a moment that sparked a certain interest in you, or a storytelling of any talents or hobbies, it’s important that you stay true to yourself and bring out your character.
The most common college essay is the “Why Us?” essay. In this essay, you basically explain why you chose to apply to that school and why they are a perfect match for you. When writing this essay, do not spend most of the time discussing obvious things like location, size, cost, etc. Although these are important and do play a major factor in why you chose that school, schools want you to be more intimate. Take the time to research specific programs, teachers, clubs, organizations, values. Doing so will show colleges how passionate you are since you took the time to search deep.
This one may seem obvious but it’s important to not forget any essential documents required for your application. This may include any test scores, transcripts, letters of recommendation, or more. Send everything they ask for.
Proof-read. Look for inconsistencies. I sat there for over an hour rereading my application 10 times before I hit submit. Please look over your application and catch any possible mistakes.
Fill out your FAFSA! Chances are you do want to receive financial aid for your college tuition so please take the time to fill that out. It is not due until June 30, 2022 for the 2021-2022 academic year but some colleges require it being filled out much sooner especially if you want financial aid for that college. Also, the sooner you fill it out, the more money may be available for you.
When filling out the activities list on the common app, it’s best to use strong language when describing what you did in a club or organization. Don’t be redundant. You need to showcase what you learned and how it shaped you.
Check your social media. Most of the time colleges do take a look at your social media and you do not want to have anything posted that you don’t want them to see. It may run a risk on your application and that’s not a chance you want to take.
Lastly, take a deep breath! It is a stressful process but you need to remind yourself to take breaks and relax. Stay connected with your friends and family. Enjoy senior year because this year will only go by once.
