With the start of the 2021-2022 school year, the students and faculty of H. Frank Carey look forward to one of the most important announcements of the year: the Valedictorian and Salutatorian of the Class of 2022! H. Frank Carey High School is proud to announce that this year’s Valedictorian and Salutatorian are Devin Casano and Emily Lavin. These two seniors are well known for being exceptionally academic students. Their hard work throughout their years at Carey has definitely paid off. They truly deserve these honorable positions and Carey commends them for all they’ve done. We asked the newly appointed Valedictorian and Salutatorian how they felt upon receiving the news and what plans they have for the future as seniors.
Salutatorian: Emily Lavin
Emily Lavin is a senior at H. Frank Carey and is the salutatorian of the Class of 2022. She admitted to having overwhelming happiness and pride when she received the news. “I cried tears of happiness while sitting in Mr. Fiore’s office, as I couldn’t believe the achievement that I had just earned.” While she has kept many of her accomplishments to herself, Emily has proven to be an exceptional student both in and out of the classroom. Emily has been apart of the varsity lacrosse team for the past 4 years and says she wouldn’t trade the relationships she has formed for anything else. She has also been an active member in Think Pink, cheer, Class of 2022, and was instrumental in the creation of the Girls for Girls Club. Emily’s academic excellence is not only shown through her induction into 6 total honor societies, but also through her outstanding AP exams scores, which she takes much pride in. She has earned 5’s on 7 out of 8 of her AP exams, with the last one being a still impressive 4, making her an AP Scholar with Distinction. She says “It is extremely rewarding and validating to know that the 5’s I earned were due to my dedication and desire to be my best self." When asked about her favorite part of being at Carey, she stated that she couldn’t pick just one moment, as there are so many memories to choose from, but it has been collectively an amazing experience as a whole. She cherishes all the football games, homecoming, and all the spirit that Carey has during the fall season. She says that if it weren’t for the school, “I wouldn’t have my best friends and a lifetime of good memories to look back on." While Emily says she isn’t sure where she’ll end up college-wise, she knows that not matter what, she’ll be able to thrive in any sort of environment. Emily plans on double majoring in either Biochemistry or Nutritional Sciences along with Healthcare Administration. She plans on becoming and OB-GYN in a hospital and wants to work towards making discoveries in women’s health and research. She also hopes to one day publish a book of medicine that will inspire other practitioners to learn new techniques and gain new perspectives. With so much ahead of Emily, we can’t wait to see where she ends up and we wish her the best of luck! Congratulations on being the Salutatorian of the Class of 2022!
Valedictorian: Devin Casano
Devin Casano is a senior at H. Frank Carey and is the Valedictorian of the Class of 2022. When asked how he felt about receiving the news of this achievement, he said, “It feels awesome to be valedictorian…to know that my hard work has paid off is really reassuring.” At the same time, Devin says that the position is daunting, since he now has to prepare a speech to say in front of hundreds of people at the graduation ceremony. Throughout his time at Carey, Devin has been involved in multiple extracurricular activities, such as being a member of the Italian Club, FBLA, the Carey Clipper, and Stage Crew. He is also the Vice President of both the Senior National Honor Society and the newly created STEAM Club. Apart from his work at Carey, Devin has dedicated much time to participating in several Student Advisory Councils for the District Attorney and a state senator. He has also been a Junior Firefighter Explorer for the Franklin Square Fire Department since 10th grade. On top of all this, Devin is able to maintain stellar grades in all his classes, especially in his history classes, an accomplishment he takes pride in. “It’s no secret that I am interested in, and arguably obsessed with, anything regarding history,” he says. “Knowing that my grades reflect my appreciation and profound interest in history is probably the accomplishment that I am most proud of.” When asked about his favorite part about being at Carey, Devin says that his experience with meeting new people and becoming friends with them has led to the creation of lifelong friendships. “Having such incredible relationships is something that I’ll cherish about my time at Carey.” After graduating, Devin plans on attending college relatively close-by for the time being, and is interested in studying Political Science and History. He also has a clear vision of what he wants to do in the future. “Afterwards, I hope to become involved in government, and hopefully (fingers crossed) become President one day.” Devin is an intelligent and ambitious student, who has a bright future ahead of him. He has been a valuable student here at Carey and we wish him the best of luck! Congratulations on being the Valedictorian of the Class of 2022!
