I need to use Arc Collector offline and am trying to use the ESRI World Imagery Basemap. I have found the "tiled" World Imagery basemap for export, but can't seem to figure out how to make it available for download. I am using iPads without cellular service, so they only work when connected to WiFi right now. The area I need imagery for is approximately 6 million acres, but that's at a course resolution. I really only need high resolution imagery (1:5,000 scale) for smaller areas of approx 10,000 acres each.

I have been researching how to create a tile package for offline use, but it is unclear to me how to do this with ESRI's basemaps within the ArcGIS Online environment. I deleted any copies of feature layers I had made, as I read this can be problematic.

For downloading map areas through Collector, you have two options, too. One is that the app user defines the area to take offline (creating on-demand map areas), and the other is to make preplanned map areas in ArcGIS Online and have your users just download them in the app. It sounds like preplanned map areas are going to be a good choice for you: In ArcGIS Online you'll specify areas and their levels of detail, and then in Collector your mobile workers pick the areas they need and download them. (Since you are using iOS, I've assumed you are using the latest Collector app, as Collector Classic doesn't support preplanned map areas.)

Hi Kylie - On your second point about taking default ESRI basemaps offline in Collector; is this the intended workflow for Field Maps as well? Will we be able to take default basemaps offline? Which imagery basemap are you using? I find that the downloads fail with no error message other than "Download Failed"

Hi Andrew -- I just tested using the "Imagery" basemap in the default basemap gallery (it points to World_Imagery (MapServer)). I made a map that is just that basemap. In the Field Maps app, I was able to "Add Offline Area" and take an area offline. Then in ArcGIS Online I used the same map, created a map area, and then successfully used Field Maps to take that map area offline. So my downloads are working with just the basemap.

This will be a supported workflow for going offline with Field Maps. Mobile map packages (MMPKs) made in ArcGIS Pro are also supported, although I believe they won't be editable. (I'm no longer on the field apps team. Colin Lawrence knows more, and can also help more with the error you are seeing when you try to download your map.)

Hi Colin - I'm looking at this issue again now. I find that when a default ESRI basemap is selected, the map cannot be taken offline. I though we had to add a specific "Offline Capable" version of the default ESRI basemaps.

Quick tip: Downloaded maps do expire. According to Google, you have up to 15 days after you dow load it before it's automatically deleted. Make sure you update the directions on Google Maps during that time frame.

You can find downloaded Google maps within the app's Offline Maps section. By tapping into the listed offline maps, you'll have the option to delete them, rename areas (via the edit function), or update them.

Make sure you've downloaded the maps of the areas you'd like to search offline. Check that you've tagged the option to use the app in offline mode. The street, city or region should be spelled correctly with no mistakes. Abbreviations might affect the app's results.

Adnan UL Haque Thanks Micheal, but after few hours of research I am still unable to find how to reload prefetch map back into MP (while offline)?. I dont see and KML/KMZ file inside gmapcache which I can easily reload.

I absolutely LOVE this app!!! We travel a lot and stay on people's property across the U.S. and I always download maps for the areas we are going to be in. I love checking out the older topo maps and seeing what I can find and it's really fun to show the property owners what used to be around. I've also found a cave that a property owner didn't know they had, super cool! I also use it for metal detecting to find good places to go! 10/10 this app is awesome!

You can download AMC maps! Edit as of 05/08/2022: I've been using this on several 4000 footers in NH, and I definitely still recommend this app. It's a great additional tool for the physical map you should already have. It shows where you are on the map based on your phone's GPS. It also allows you to take notes by placing pins on the downloaded map. Also note: once a map is downloaded, the app works offline.

Great app!.. everything I like about paper maps and nothing I hate about digital maps. Satelite connection is very solid and tracking is accurate. This app also hosts a sweet cache of maps. I use it to get around northern WI on atv and snow machine. I used it to find my property boundries by setting the coordinates and following the heading! I use this app nearly every day and I would just like to say thanks a bunch to the developers.

Really cool app. It allows me to download state park maps, which are available for free, and use them to navigate around hiking trails in real-time so I can become more familiar with them. Very useful tool and makes it a lot less daunting to go to larger areas without having to worry about getting lost.

This is the best map app ever! I am not an expert by any means, but I do use them a lot, and this app is the closest thing to GPS you can get! Many features, too many to mention here! Try it you will like it! Of course, it costs to buy maps and get excellent functionality from the app itself but it's well worth the price. Try it free (I bet you buy it)
