Throughout the series, Link has made multiple appearances in a variety of incarnations, but has been traditionally depicted in his signature green cap and tunic wielding a sword and shield. He has appeared as both a child and young adult of the elf-like Hylian race. Within Zelda mythology, Link is the soul of a legendary hero that throughout history is reincarnated within a seemingly ordinary boy or young man whenever evil arises. To defeat Ganon, Link usually obtains the mystical Master Sword or a similar legendary weapon obtained after completing many trials.

Link's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, said that his concept of The Legend of Zelda was based on his childhood memories as well as books and movies that he and video game designer Takashi Tezuka had enjoyed, notably J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Miyamoto wanted people to have the opportunity to be heroes and created Link as a normal boy, with "a destiny to fight great evil".[1] On the origin of the character's name, Miyamoto said: "Link's name comes from the fact that originally, the fragments of the Triforce were supposed to be electronic chips. The game was to be set in both the past and the future and as the main character would travel between both and be the link between them, they called him Link". In the Nintendo book Hyrule Historia he said that the character is named Link because he, "connects people together" and, "he was supposed to spread the scattered energy of the world through the ages".[2]

Link is the "Hero of Hyrule", the archetypal hero and protagonist of The Legend of Zelda series. Whenever a great malevolence threatens the Kingdom of Hyrule, typically in the form of Ganon, Link is the counterpart who is destined to fight that evil and restore peace to the people of Hyrule. He begins each game as either a child or young adult who is often lazy and unprepared for battle, but develops his skills and experience over the course of the game as the player upgrades his weapons and health. His story varies from game to game, but typically involves a similar thread of solving dungeon puzzles, saving Princess Zelda and defeating Ganon or some other evil.[34] He displays the characteristic traits of the Hylian race, being of humanoid form with elfin features, including pointed ears. Since the first The Legend of Zelda video game, he has been repeatedly depicted wearing his characteristic green cap and tunic and typically wields a sword and shield.[35] Link's age varies across the series, starting the first game at ten years old and its sequel at 16. In Ocarina of Time, he is initially aged nine and is aged up to 16 after the game's time shift. In The Wind Waker, Toon Link is 12, whereas in Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild, Link is aged 16 or 17 years old.[36]

Anthropologist Samy Alim argues that the relationship between race, language and racism plays such a key role in reflecting and defining the way human societies are structured that it deserves study as a separate field, which he calls raciolinguistics.

Alim, a professor in the Stanford Graduate School of Education, examines the connection between language, race and power in a new book, co-edited with John Rickford and Arnetha Ball. The book, Raciolinguistics: How Language Shapes Our Ideas About Race, compiles recent scholarly research on different societies around the world.

It is now nearly impossible to ignore social scientific research of all stripes, which demonstrates that, rather than postracial, American society is in fact hyperracial or hyperracializing. That is, we are constantly orienting to race while at the same time denying the overwhelming evidence that shows the myriad ways that American society is fundamentally structured by it.

Some linguists study language in a vacuum without theorizing race at all. On the other hand, race scholars that do think a lot about race oftentimes neglect the central role that language plays in processes of racialization.

Stepping aside from the female Link discussion, I had a somewhat similar thought that would likely also garner mixed thoughts -- what if Link, the spirit of the hero, was born into a different race as determined by fate for one game?

I'm not suggesting that this be something customizable, no, I'm specifically referring to the human in-game races. Not as something that can be changed with an option or with masks, but as one race other than Hylian. By human race, I mean people like the Gerudo, Sheikah, and even Kokiri, people who are the most human of the established races. If Link were any one of them aside from being a Hylian, how would people feel?

What if, for example, he was a young Gerudo prince serving as an ambassador for his people, or born into secret servitude for the Royal Family as part of the Sheikah clan? What about a child Link who actually is a Kokiri, and not raised into thinking he was one? There's been some speculation over whether Link in ZWU is an apprentice or raised by the Gerudo or Sheikah, and it made me wonder, what if he was actually one of those races?

Personally, I wouldn't mind it, so long as he kept certain traits to him that we come to associate with Link. Things like lighter-colored hair, blue eyes and pointed ears. Those, I don't think, would change regardless of race, because they're an established part of his character. I shouldn't think that the spirit of the hero dictates that Link needs to be purely Hylian. If somehow necessary as determined by fate, I don't really see why the spirit of the hero can't be reborn into a different race.

Well for one, Sheikahs need red eyes, and frankly I'm starting to doubt that they're even a race, and for two, yes yes I would. Being a Hylian is probably more important to Link than even being a boy, it's like one his most well known traits.

I wouldn't necessarily say that Sheikah would need red eyes, especially since the only true Sheikah we ever see is Impa. Should the fate of the future find it necessary for a future hero to be born within a different group of people, certain established traits would still be there, especially if indicated as a sign of prophecy. I've mentioned something like this in my first post, that if the hero were to born into any of the other human races, he would still have blue-eyes, light hair and pointed ears, as those are a part of his established appearance.

Honestly, the most definite established thing would just be his green tunic, considering he still keeps that even when he transforms into other races using the masks from MM. Things like the blue eyes and blond hair are not retained in those transformations (with the exception of Deku Link). Zora Link's head fin turns a shade of green to represent his cap, something which Mikau obviously didn't have. With that said, the tunic is the most iconic part of Link, and it is actually. Now, we're seeing all sorts of changes to Link in just ZWU, since he's not wearing the green tunic, and his hair looks more brown than blond now.
