Opening the envelope and seeing your brand-new Capital One card feels exciting. But before you tap, swipe, or shop online, there’s one important step left activation. If you’re a first-time Capital One cardholder, don’t worry. The process is simple, secure, and takes only a few minutes. Here’s a fresh and easy guide to getting your card ready for use.

Prepare Your Card

You’ll need the physical card and its details ready.

• Locate the 3-digit security code on the back of your card

• Keep your card number and expiration date handy

• Ensure you have internet access or a phone available

Activate via Mobile App

Most Convenient

The Capital One Mobile app offers the easiest activation process.

Open Capital One Mobile App → Profile → Account & Feature Settings → Activate a Credit Card

• Sign in or create a Capital One online account

• Enter the card’s security code when prompted

• Confirm activation

Activate via Website

You can also activate your card through Capital One’s website.

Go to capitalone.com → I Want To… → Account Settings → Activate Card

• Sign in with your Capital One username

• Link your new card to your account

• Enter the security code to finish

Activate via Phone

If you prefer, you can call to activate your card.

• Dial the phone number on the sticker attached to your card

• Follow the automated prompts

• Provide your card number and security code for verification

After Activation

Important

Once activated, secure your old card and update payment info.

• Dispose of old cards: cut plastic cards through the chip and strip; return metal cards in the provided envelope

• Update recurring charges and subscriptions with your new card number

• Start using your card immediately
