This finding is directly relevant to the current debate, because Obama and Democrats want to offset the sequester in part by closing loopholes enjoyed by the wealthy, such as the one that keeps tax rates on capital gains and dividends low. Dems want to do this in order to prevent a scenario where the sequester is averted only by deep spending cuts to social programs that could hurt a whole lot of poor and middle class Americans. Republicans oppose closing any such loopholes and want to avert the sequester with only deep spending cuts.

At the appointed hour on parade night, the 90-minute spectacle opens with a 30-minute concert by the Marine Corps Band, the musical group that John Philip Sousa organized and once led on triumphant tours of world capitals.

That such a variety of flawless music can come from nothing more than a few hundred pounds of brass and several handfuls of drumsticks is almost beyond belief. And that one long, gutsy blare they issue several times during the evening causes the flesh to shudder.

The night will resound to the beat of African drums, Korean drums and Latin drums in performances rotating throughout the night and culminating at midnight in one big, universal beat to welcome in the new year.

The first breakthrough came in May when how-bugs-fly researcher Michael H. Dickinson, of the University of California at Berkeley, began collecting data from a six-foot-tall drum of high viscosity mineral oil in which he had suspended a pair of 10-inch imitation insect wings fitted with sensors.

The Hohhot Manchu Taiping Drum Dance, often performed in and around the city of Hohhot, capital of North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, has a history of some 300 years and was recognized as a representative project of autonomous region-level intangible cultural heritage in 2009.

Characterized by its distinct local flavor in terms of the skillful drum beat and the changing steps and formation, the art form is designed to express love and hope for peace, prosperity and a better life.

A half-mile underground beneath a windswept field in the southeast corner of New Mexico, hundreds of workers haul drums of radioactive waste into a salt mine that will entomb them for at least 10,000 years.

The mine employs about 1,500 people and now holds drums full of roughly 2.6 million cubic feet of tools, clothing, soil, and other objects contaminated by research and development of the atomic bomb and the nuclear arms race.

Workers haul the drums through the vast underground network, geothermally heated to about 82F at all times. Salt crunching under their boots, they navigate with handheld maps, posted coordinates and color-coded emergency escape routes. The drums are stacked in rooms nearly as long as a football field. Workers often end their shift with a salty aftertaste.

The salt seam is naturally elastic, WIPP officials say, so when one panel closes, the salt gradually collapses and molds tightly around the drums. Elsewhere, mammoth mining machines chew new passages through the seam, installing bolts to keep the migrating salt at bay. ff782bc1db
