Junior Championship and Age Groups
Pairings and Results
The Canterbury Junior Chess Championships are open to juniors under 20 at the start of the year.
The highest-placed Canterbury junior will be the 2024 Canterbury Junior Chess Champion and the highest-placed girl will the 2024 Canterbury Junior Girls Chess Champion.
Titles will also be awarded in these age groups:
Under 16
Under 14
Under 12
Under 10
Players must be born on or after 1 January 2004 to play, and 2008/2010/2012/2014 respectively for the age groups.
Medals and certificates will be awarded to the highest-placed player and girls overall and in each age group for open and best girl.
There will be other prizes dependent on entries.
Tournament Format
5 round tournament using Swiss pairings (i.e. players are paired against other players on the same score where possible) so all players will usually play all rounds (if there is an odd number, one player each round will get a bye i.e. no game and 1 point).
In addition to the open section, the age groups will be run as separate sections, noting that the organisers reserve the right to combine age-adjacent sections with low numbers. Players may choose to play in the open section or the section for their age.
Players may take one half-point bye on Saturday (please indicate which round in the entry form).
The tournament will be officially rated by the New Zealand Chess Federation (NZCF) if possible.
Laws of Chess apply including notation (writing the moves down) - scoresheets and pens are provided.
Chess clocks will be used with a time control of 60 minutes for the game plus 30 seconds additional per move from move 1.
Players not in the venue 30 minutes after a round's start time will default that round and may be withdrawn from the tournament.
