Does anyone happen to know a legitimate source for the latest firmware update for the first generation EOS 5D? The current version in my camera now is 1.1.0 and believe the latest final release for this now unsupported by Canon 5D is verion 1.1.1.

Firmware files for some of our older cameras are no longer available through Canon. Unfortunately the EOS 5D is one of the models that no longer have firmware files available through Canon. Due to that you will not be able to download it through out website and there is not a way to send you the files.

In the case of my 5D with the 1.1.0 firmware, it wont recognize my 32GB memory card as anything more than a 8GB card. The newer 1.1.1 firmware addresses this, but I understand your point, maybe its best to just live with what I have than take a risk.

Here is a link where you can download firmware 1.1.1 for 5D Classic. It also has some of the instructions that need to be followed carefully when doing firmware updates. For additional, step by step installation of a firmware update, see any of the newer cameras where the instructions are still online.

You'll need a fully charged battery and a memory card without any photos on it (or anything else that you want to keep, because you'll need to format it in your camera prior to installing the new firmware file on it). It's critical to not interrupt the camera during the installation of the software.

It is the first time that I try to update the firmware of my 5D Mk III ever since I purchased it 7 years ago :P. However, after I downloaded the FIR file (around 17.56 MB for 1.3.6) in both my PC and a formatted SD Card, I coud not complete the update neither with EOS Utility nor the SD Card inserted inside the camera.

After the LCD screen shows firmware update is loading....., it turns blank. It is not switched off as the screen is still slightly illuminating. Then it just hanged there until the screen is automatically switched off. I switched off the camera and on again, the setting still shows the original firmware (1.1.2). Luckily , I still can operate the camera with the old firmware. I tried the update process again many times but it still stuck at the same stage.

I'm curious, though. You have used the camera for years without ever updating the firmware. Why now? Is this to correct some issue you are having with the camera? What is the driving reason to update the camera after so many years?

Just purchased an old 5D Mark ii and I am trying to update the firmware. The camera menu seems to be a bit short though. There is no firmware version section at all. I have tried to update it using the EOS utility on the computer, but the firmware section there is greyed out and I can not select it. Any ideas?

Excellent advice! .@cpcw06 Here's a shortcut to our site where you can get the most current firmware, software, and every manual that's available for download for the 5D Mark II: CLICK HERE

I downloaded the firmware, extracted the file, copied it to the root on a freshly formatted SD card (did the formatting on the camera itself). The camera is set on P mode, as suggested in the updating procedure. I can see just fine the firmware menu, on the fifth Settings tab.

Then Im asked to select the firmware, which can be seen there just fine as a .FIR file. But, and heres the fun part, theres no OK button. Just the Cancel one. So I cant move past this point. Any ideas would be appreciated.

It may be an idea to format a card and put the new G7X II firmware on it and put it in the camera and see what happens. It probably looks for the file type on the card and boots up with an update sequence and checks the version. I presume you have checked your serial number and you actually need the update as per Canon's advice on the support site.

I know that the camera can record both audio and video when in mirroring mode (if you press the record button on the camera), but it made me wonder if audio is even captured along with the video when using an external recorder. So I hooked it up to my AJA ioXT and tested it out. Unfortunately, there was no audio signal captured along with the YCbCr 4:2:2 8-bit video. Therefore, those of you who are like me and have an XLR audio solution running through your 5Dm3 will not be able to utilize your audio when capturing externally. This means that you will need to plan on two system recording setups on your shoots. Also note that PluralEyes will be useless to you as well because there will be no reference audio to sync your clips to. This means that we are back to the dark ages of syncing the footage manually so make sure you keep track of your shot numbers and use a marker on every take.

I think it only applies to the 5D3 with 1.3.3 firmware.(so far) As long as you don't have 1.3.3 on your 5D3 you are still able to backdate to earlier firmware versions using the memory card. Once you install 1.3.3 you will have to use the EOS Utility method.

For Canon Cameras, there is a FREE firmware called Magic Lantern. Magic Lantern (ML) is an enhanced upgrade to the Canon DSLR firmware. If you have a Canon DSLR and like experimenting with digital technology, then Magic Lantern could be for you. Magic Lantern Firmware will mount on one of your memory cards and will be available whenever that card is inserted.

The critical points to successful installation is following the instructions to the letter. Having up-to-date canon firmware is very important because the Magic Lantern software is reverse engineered from this. If you try to install Magic Lantern on an older version of the Canon Firmware, then you will have problems.

For all these examples, the ML firmware can help. It will let you program several exposures for challenging light conditions. It can also let you program the length of your exposure in Bulb Mode, leaving you camera to do all the work hands-free.

The ML firmware will give you more control over your Aperture settings. It will allow you to fine tune your exposure with 1/8 stop increments. In situations where exposure is critical, this feature can be very useful.

The more modern Canon DSLRs have high-end video built in. Having the ML firmware can give you extra features that can be useful for serious Film Makers. Magic Lantern give you greater control over exposure and has useful features such as exposure lock for more professional results. For example, I was able to adjust the aperture and exposure compensation in video mode which allowed me to create beter moods.

I really enjoyed having the Magic Lantern on my Canon EOS 5D mark II. I was really into all the new digital photography techniques and this firmware gave me a creative edge. I was able to take several HDR exposure, make time lapse films and program a Focus Stack. I never tried, but it would have been possible to make a time-lapse with focus stacked HDR exposures, if I wanted to.

Firmware Version 1.3.6 incorporates the following fix:

1. Corrects a PTP communications vulnerability.

2. Corrects a vulnerability related to firmware update.

Firmware Version 1.3.6 is for cameras with firmware Version 1.3.5. If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.3.6, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

When updating the firmware of the camera, please review the instructions thoroughly before you download the firmware.
