University of Calgary, SLLLC Prize

My name is Sherry Yuan, and I am a fifth year student major in Japanese and International Relations at the University of Calgary. My interest in Japan first developed at the age of 6 when I watched the anime "Detective Conan" on TV. I then started to learn some Japanese words and cultural beliefs from the anime. With my attraction to the rich culture and traditions, I became very enthusiastic about going to Japan and went on my first trip in 2012. The visit sparked the start of my Japanese studies at the University of Calgary, and Japanese has now become my keen interest. I've travelled to Japan 4 times in the past time, and last year, I was honored with the opportunity to spend an academic year in Kyoto for exchange. For 6 months stayed in Kyoto, it had became my favourite city in Japan. Upon knowing the video contest, i think it is a great opportunity to make a short clip to show people how great my beloved city - Kyoto is. Beside those fancy famous sightseeing spots in Kyoto that people usually see online, I mainly record the street scenes from my resident to my workplace. Hope to create something different.

Creative Award

My name is Dallin Akune, I am a second-year student at the University of British Columbia. I have been learning the Japanese language under Kim Ihhwa sensei, who creates a very engaging and entertaining environment that has really influenced me to continue studying. Having an incredible experience exploring Tokyo last May, I aspire to return, potentially teach English and eat as much onigiri as I can. Honestly, I initially decided to create the video because I thought it would be the easiest way to finish a project assignment for class. But it turned out to be an unbelievably fun way to apply my knowledge while learning about Japanese culture. I would also like to thank Tora Shimojima for appearing as Dr. Shimojima, and Boss Coffee for creating the best coffee I’ve ever had.
