My way to learn the language
First Prize
My name is Jacob Cuke, and I am a second year Computer Science major and Japanese minor at the University of Calgary. I have been studying Japanese on my own for around 2 years now, mostly using the methods that I described in my video. I started studying Japanese from a passion to learn a language other than my own, coupled with a growing interest in the country and culture of Japan. This has led me to also take Japanese courses at my university, covering language, history and culture. In addition, I am travelling to Japan for the first time this coming May to study the language and culture firsthand at a Japanese university!

Second Prize
My name is Hee Su Kim, and I'm a student at UBC. I have been interested in learning Japanese since I was young (thanks to Naruto) but never really had a chance to. Then I realized I actually could by taking Japanese courses at UBC! Although it was difficult to learn new characters and grammars, I found it very rewarding when I started to understand some words and sentences while watching Japanese videos on YouTube (Yes, to be honest, my video's based on personal experiences). I had fun time coming up with ideas, filming and editing the video. Thank you again for making opportunities like this!
