There are also three types of geographic area: administrative, statistical and non-standard. Administrative areas are defined, with a few exceptions, by Canadian federal and provincial/territorial statutes or agencies, and adopted by Statistics Canada for the purpose of data dissemination activities. Examples include: provinces, territories, health regions and federal electoral districts. Statistical areas are defined by Statistics Canada to support census and survey dissemination activities. They are created according to a set of rules based on geographic attributes and one or more characteristics of the resident population. Examples include: populations centres, economic regions and dissemination areas. Non-standard areas are defined by Statistics Canada as areas that are customized aggregations of individual standard geographic areas, and areas that do not match the standard geographic areas at all. Examples include: the population and agricultural ecumenes.

I am trying to plot some provincial data about Canada on a map. However, some of my data is aggregated into regions so I need to combine some provinces on my map. I am aware the provinces in my data overlap with some of the regions (Alberta is part of the Prairies), but this is what I have.

As you can see below, this creates a mess. Preferably I would also remove any borders between provinces within the same region. I admit I don't know much about shape files or GIS, so please let me know if what I want to do is impossible.

So far I have only been able to plot the Canadian provinces/territory within matplotlib, but their shapes appear in a unique color, and I don't know how to change that according to the numbers in values.

'Province' and 'territory' refer to the major political units of Canada. From a statistical point of view, province and territory are basic areas for which data are tabulated. Canada is divided into 10 provinces and 3 territories. Statistics Canada uses standard codes and abbreviations to represent provinces and territories. The two-digit code that uniquely identifies each province/territory is based on the Standard Geographical Classification (SGC). The code is assigned from east to west. The first digit represents the geographical region of Canada in which the province/territory is located and the second digit denotes one of the 10 provinces and 3 territories.

Files of official geographical names for individual provinces and territories, as well as for the offshore, are available in Text, Shape and KML formats from the table below. The files are re-generated on a weekly basis to include the most recent updates from the Canadian Geographical Names Database.

I am preparing surrogates for a new grid and will apply them to 2016v1 and 2017v1 platform. However, the generated surrogates for CAN and MEX seem not in completeness so that the gridded emissions only cover part of the domain. I find that the surrogates lack some FIPS. For example, in CAN_200, it does not have 110000, 135101, 135102, 135103,135104, etc. Insead, it has 135000. I feel that this problem is caused by the shapefile.

I am now using the files from _surrogates/shapefiles/CANADA2015_shapefiles_for_2016_platform.zip. Anyone knows where can I find the suitable one?

The Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) uses shapefiles for base maps in the system. A widely used common subset of these shapefiles have been made available for use by NWS partners. These shapefiles contain boundaries of areas used by NWS for forecasts and warnings as well as map backgrounds.

The Large Fire Database (LFDB) is a collection of forest fire locations as provided by Canadian fire management agencies including provinces, territories, and Parks Canada. The data set includes only fires greater than 200 hectares in final size for years 1959 through 1999. This version was released in May 2002, and a detailed analysis was published by Stocks et al. in 2002. The LFDB is no longer maintained, but it has been replaced by the National Fire Database.

You can use custom maps with Shape map as long as they are in the TopoJSON format. If your map is in another format, you can use online tools such as Map Shaper to convert your shapefiles or your GeoJSON maps into the TopoJSON format.

The inputs for the ODB are datasets provided by municipal, regional or provincial sources available to the general public through open government portals under various types of open data licenses. The current version of the database (version 2.0) contains approximately 4.4 million records and includes provinces and territories where open building footprints were found during the collection period (from January to August 2018 for version 1.0, and February 2019 for additions made in version 2.0).

We have a separate shapefile for each province. In each shapefile, we capture the timezone boundaries internal to the province. The idea is that those shapefiles can be combined with various base shapefiles providing the provincial boundaries. (The particular problem we want to solve is that Canada has many islands, and we prefer to not have to worry about those and the provinces they are in when dealing with timezones).

2. Remove the included example map files, and copy your own shapefiles here.

3. Rename your files (e.g. xxx.shp and xxx.dbf) to map.shp and map.dbf. Only these files are required.

4. Open the StatPlanet_data_editor file. Click on the button 'Setup shapefile' (in the top-left).

5. Select the map.dbf file in the 'map' sub-folder, and follow the instructions.
