Canada has played a foundational role in the development of deep learning and artificial intelligence. Canadian researchers are widely recognized as pioneers in neural networks, deep learning, and reinforcement learning. Institutions, such as the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) and the Vector Institute, have long supported open, fundamental research that laid the groundwork for today’s AI breakthroughs. Canada's early and sustained investment in AI research fostered an ecosystem that has attracted global talent and driven major advances in both theory and applications.
The Canada CIFAR AI Chairs program is a cornerstone of the Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy. Launched in 2017, it aims to recruit and retain top AI researchers in Canada by providing long-term, dedicated research funding. The program supports over 120 Chairs across Canada's three National AI Institutes: Amii in Edmonton, Mila in Montréal, and the Vector Institute in Toronto. These Chairs advance research in various AI fields, including natural language processing, computer vision, health care, climate science, and ethical AI.
Canada AI Day will showcase how these leading researchers are advancing the field of AI. It will also explore critical issues in AI technology development and application, such as developing trustworthy and interpretable AI, addressing ethical and societal impacts, and fostering responsible deployment across sectors.
The event will feature four invited talks by CIFAR AI Chairs, followed by a panel discussion on Building the Future of AI:
Data, Reasoning, and Trust.
