Voting Process

Children’s Choice Student Voting Process

The school library media specialist or public librarian will visit the Alabama Library Media website and register their school for participation on or after October 15, 2021. Registration closes on February 1, 2022.

To become qualified voters, young readers must be exposed to the required number of nominated books in their appropriate division by:

  • Reading the books themselves.

  • Having the books read to them.

  • Any combination of the two.

Required division minimums:

  • Grades K-1; Grades 2-3 – 6 of 10 titles

  • Grades 4-5 - 4 total titles

  • Grades 6+ - 3 titles

Voting Procedures:

  • Qualified individual voters are allowed one vote per grade level division.

  • A responsible adult in a classroom or library setting must monitor the voting procedure.

  • The voting process at the school level may be set up as the institution sees fit utilizing a ballot box, electronic vote or other means such as voting parties or celebrations.

  • The library media specialist and school staff are encouraged to collaborate and build activities that will best benefit their student body.

  • Schools are free to be creative while operating within the guidelines found in this document.

  • The Librarian should submit ONE school wide total to the Alabama State Department of Education using the electronic link sent to registered participating institutions. Votes should be for each individual nominee, not just the school wide winner.
