Medicalization is understood as “the process by which a mental or physical condition comes to be seen as a medical condition deserving of medical attention." The more medical attention we give to a condition, the more we learn about it. But what is the nature of that knowledge? Can medicalization tell us all we need to know? What are the limits of medicalization? Our talk will revolve around these and other questions.
Ramy Amin is a PhD student at the University of Cincinnati. His research focuses on the philosophy of science, with special attention to questions related to neuroscience. His goal is to explore how topics such as causation, properties, emergence, and levels of explanation can be informed by, and applied to, research in neuroscience.
