Cali Smith, PDA Blue 09 - PDA 09 continued its unbeaten season with a perfect week in San Diego, scoring 18 and conceding zero. A key cog in that success was Smith, a box-to-box midfielder as comfortable defending as she is on the ball. Her dominance protected the back four and laid the groundwork for the offense to do what it does best. Top Drawer Soccer - ECNL Playoffs Best XI

Cali Smith, PDA – The holding midfielder for PDA was excellent in this game. She was always in the right spot against a San Diego Surf team that is incredibly challenging for midfielders. Surf’s skill and movement is something most teams don’t face on a weekly or even monthly basis. Smith slowing down that trio and winning countless duels in the open field really dictated the game. Smith’s quick-reaction was key to the second goal of the first half for PDA.
It took the whole team effort to complete the undefeated National Champion season on Monday with a win. That said, the midfielders won that game in the first half. The effort and commitment to hound the Surf and create turnovers in key spots were the decisive moments of the game. The midfield really impressed with how quick they were in the counter. They did not waste touches. When they won the ball, they immediately sprung the attack – and their passes (often on the first touch) were accurate. It was the key to beating a talented squad.
Smith is a midfielder on the PDA 09 Blue ECNL team. She is a box-to-box midfielder. She is a fun soccer player to scout. She is super slippery to defend – elusive in tight spaces, great at body feints. She uses her quick feet well in duels as she likes to get away from the opposition – rather than seek out contact. She is a good passer. She hits a variety of passes and does a good job of looking off defenders to creating passing lanes. She often plays the pass between the outside back and center back for the attacker to exploit the space when the outside back is too tight on the mark. It’s a clever pass and one that is seen more often at the higher levels of the game. Smith has some elite qualities for her position. She is one of the top players in the state for that region.
