The ephemeral qualities in my work—such as the delicate, eroded rims of bowls, the fragile ceramic netting of Ghost Gear, and the ever-present risk of loss during kiln firings—embody themes of breakage and disappearance. Links break, holes appear, and pieces disintegrate. The fragile nature of the works reflects the toll that fishing pollution has taken on marine life and mirrors the vulnerable state of the ocean, its coral reefs, and its wildlife.
Like much of my work, Ghost Gear holds an impermanent quality. Drawn to the materiality of ceramics and the challenge of transforming a rigid medium into something flexible, the piece became an exploration of both material and form—letting the process guide me. Its sound element adds another layer, producing soft chimes that evoke the feeling of being and hearing underwater.
