This 3-point course is in the first year of Master and is a part of "Advanced Computer Aided Modeling and Visualization". (The other part is CAD)
The CAID programs used, on Windows based workstations, is:
Alias Autostudio (PC only) from Autodesk
VRed Pro from Autodesk and KeyShot (PC only) for Rendering and VR (Virtual Reality)
Blender, Meshmixer (Mac&PC) and Netfabb basic 5.2 (PC, old vers.) for polygon work
Students are given training in CAID on a deeper level in order to be able to create advanced 3D models and make effective visualizations.
The aim is to give a more in depth knowledge on how to use several CAD tools to achive error free 3D-printing and milling files
After having completed the course, the student will be able to:
work independently with CAID tools when applying computer aided design processes, from concept draft to complete prototype.
analyse a model, from the model choose relevant modelling strategy, and carry out surface modelling from the chosen strategy.
visually present your virtual model in various ways, such as a rendered and printed out illustration, an animation that is rendered and compiled as a movie, a real-time presentation on screen or via projector.
account for how you design CAID-files for milling and for freeform creation (3D-printing)
account for how to scan a physical object and then continue the modeling work in a virtual 3D environment.
Completion of CAID 1
In Canvas under Files you can find last years evaluation of this course
Tuition is in the form of lectures and practical training under the supervision of tutor. In computer labs exercises will be carried out under the guidance of an authorized teacher. All sections in the course are obligatory. The course material could be found through this web page (located at our school server and OneDrive share) see links below.
All necessary software is already installed
But bring your own headphones!
install Blender MacOS and PC
install VRed PRO PC (an alternative is installing KeyShot, go here)
install the Asset Manager PC with Shaders, Materials, manikins... verify and install guide here
install guide for Zoom
install Teams for easy access to support or collaboration
From HOME use VPN-access to the school resources as file server, license servers and Course Material. vpn.student.umu.se
If possible, use an ethernet cable and not wifi. 3D-files can be slooow on wifi :)
At home, Start VPN and (turn off when not needed)

How 3D volume sketches can improve this collaboration
Why a polygon tool.
Why Blender is so important for Designers.

Simple tricks with shaders and lights
A look at some of the technologies and there different possibilities.
Pointcloud
Meshes, Polygons
NURBS
Solids
STL, OBJ, FBX and Iges, Step
Look at:
Quality
size
cost
speed
thickness and
material strength.
Check size. Analyze > Unit/Dimensions adjust direct or use Edit > Transform
If blue lines, try Edit > Close Cracks
Use the "X-ray shader" to see if there is something inside that should not be there
Edit > Seperate shells to verify that no unwanted pieces exist
Analyze > Inspector to make it "solid" (one volume) Friendly to your original mesh
Edit > Make Solid A quick shortcut to make things solid but could give unwanted result
Thicken very thin parts. Edit > Make Solid Offset
Adjust and balance the polygon size at intersection before Boolean Union! Very stretched polygons might cause problems. Strive for similar polygon size on both parts at intersection.
Use Select > Edit > Remesh > Linear SubDivision
Or use a brush. Sculpt > Brushes > Refine
Ctrl-click two parts and use boolean UNION to merge two volumes (check with x-ray if it went okey)
Make interesting Voronoi pattern! Very easy. See the rendering of the Bunny :)
Meshmixer: Adjust polygon size at intersection before Boolean Union! Very stretched polygons might cause problems. Stive for similar polygon size on both parts at intersection.
Use Select > Edit > Remesh > Linear SubDivision
Or use a brush. Sculpt > Brushes > Refine
Use Repair and possibly go for an Automatic Repair. Right-click and save as Bin STL
Print a random pattern (or newspaper) to use with Photogrammetry (under the model when taking photos)
Thicken very thin parts and "impossibly" parts. Edit > Make Solid Offset (use offset inside the Make Solid tool)
Open assignment with instructions in Canvas
Make a 3D-printable file by repairing and cleaning.
Mix if you like different sources.
Alias or Blender source. A model you have made!
3D-scan source

( Makehuman or other software)
ALWAYS check for OK result with Netfabb Analyze! ! !
This did not work... Can you show how to...
Correcting Surface Normals, Splitting to avoid Under Cut areas, Positioning flat on the Grid
Remember the radius that the milling tool leaves, for the "pocket"
Analys the "draft angles" in your model
...? :)
5-axis, 3-axis
NURBS, Meshes
STL, OBJ, FBX, IGES, STEP
Why milling when you can just 3D-print?
How is quality set? What is step-over?
Decide what milling tool diameter you can accept
A small diameter gives better geometry details but lower max height to mill from. You might need to split the parts
A big diameter gives the possibility to mill from a thicker base block (material)
Decide which milling Machine that will be used. This sets the maximum dimensions in X,Y and Z direction
Roland MDX-40A 300x300x50mm
Sahos 2000x1500x900mm
Decide where to split the 3D-model
Decide the "step over" distance. Quality vs manufacturing time
