The Cabin baggage Lufthansa rules are simple when you know the limits. Each cabin bag can measure up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm and weigh up to 8 kg, while the personal item can measure up to 40 x 30 x 10 cm. Allowances depend on your fare, so check your ticket before packing. Keep liquids in small containers, carry power banks in your cabin bag and weigh your luggage at home. Following these tips helps you avoid extra fees and enjoy a smooth, stress-free journey.
What Is Lufthansa Cabin Baggage?
Cabin baggage, also called hand luggage or carry-on, is the luggage you take with you into the aircraft cabin. It is stored in the overhead locker or under the seat in front of you. Lufthansa separates cabin baggage into two categories:
A cabin bag, usually a small trolley suitcase or a compact travel bag.
A personal item, such as a handbag, laptop bag or small backpack.
Whether you can take both depends on the fare you book, so check your ticket before you pack.
Lufthansa Cabin Baggage Size and Weight Limits
The standard Lufthansa cabin bag limits are straightforward. The personal item has its own, smaller size limit.
Cabin bag size: up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm (21.7 x 15.7 x 9.1 inches)
Cabin bag weight: up to 8 kg (17.6 lb)
Personal item size: up to 40 x 30 x 10 cm
Personal item weight: up to 8 kg
These measurements include wheels, handles and outer pockets, so measure the whole bag. A suitcase that looks compact can still be over the limit once the wheels are counted.
Cabin Baggage vs Checked Baggage: Which Should You Choose?
For a weekend city break or a short business trip, cabin baggage alone is usually enough. You skip the baggage belt, reduce the risk of delayed luggage and often pay less. For longer holidays, winter travel or trips with sports equipment, adding a checked bag can be more practical. If you are on Economy Light or Economy Basic, compare the cost of adding a checked bag with upgrading your fare, as the difference can be small.
Cabin Baggage Allowance by Fare
This is where many passengers get confused. Lufthansa has introduced different economy fares, and the cabin allowance varies between them.
Lufthansa's newer Economy Basic fare is the most restrictive. It allows one personal item only, with no cabin bag. If you book this fare and arrive with a trolley suitcase, you may be charged a fee or asked to check the bag in. Read the fare conditions carefully before you pay.
Economy Light, Classic and Flex
On these fares, you can bring one cabin bag and one personal item. Economy Light does not include checked baggage, but you can add a bag to your booking for a fee. For a short trip, a cabin bag plus a personal item is often enough.
Premium Economy follows the same pattern. The cabin allowance is one 8 kg bag plus one personal item. The extra benefits are mainly a more spacious seat and better service.
Premium cabins offer a more generous allowance. An additional cabin bag is allowed in Business and First Class. That means two cabin bags plus a personal item.
Items You Can Carry Free of Charge
Besides your cabin bag and personal item, airlines usually let passengers carry a few essential items. These typically include a coat or jacket, an umbrella, a small camera and baby-care items for infants. They must still fit within the airline's size and weight limits and may count towards your allowance, so confirm the details on Lufthansa's website before you fly.
What Happens If Your Bag Is Too Big or Too Heavy?
Lufthansa staff may check cabin bags at the gate, and some airports are strict about weight. If your bag exceeds the limits, you may have to:
pay an excess or gate-check fee,
move items into your personal item,
check the bag in, which can be costly at the gate.
The easiest way to avoid this is to weigh your bag at home and measure it once fully packed.
The Rules for Liquids and Power Banks
Lufthansa follows standard security rules for liquids:
Containers must hold no more than 100 ml each.
All containers must fit in one transparent, resealable bag.
You must remove the bag from your hand luggage at security.
Power banks and lithium batteries need extra attention. Lufthansa tightened its rules for carrying power banks in the cabin in January 2026. Spare batteries and power banks must travel in your cabin baggage, never in checked luggage. Because the rules have changed recently, check the current limits for capacity and number of devices before you travel.
Knowing the Lufthansa cabin baggage rules saves you money and stress. Keep your cabin bag within 55 x 40 x 23 cm and 8 kg, check what your fare includes, and pack your personal item with essentials. Above all, confirm the latest rules on Lufthansa's official site before you fly, since fares and policies can change.
With a little planning, you can walk through the airport with just your hand luggage and begin your trip without delays.
