Amazon and AWS Announce Significant Investments in Germany

Amazon and its cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS), have announced major investments in Germany as part of their efforts to expand their presence across Europe. The companies are planning to invest a combined €18.8 billion ($20.1 billion) in the country by 2026, creating thousands of new jobs in the process.

Amazon's investment plan includes an additional €10 billion ($10.7 billion) into its cloud infrastructure and logistics network in Germany. This is on top of the €8.8 billion that AWS plans to invest in the country by 2026 to continue building, maintaining, and operating its cloud infrastructure for the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region.[1]

The investments will help meet the growing customer demand for AWS technologies in Germany, including artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced cloud services. According to a new AWS economic impact study, the company's investment plan is estimated to contribute €15.4 billion to Germany's GDP over this period, while supporting an average of 15,200 full-time jobs annually in the local supply chain.[1]

In addition to the cloud infrastructure investments, Amazon also announced the creation of 4,000 new jobs in Germany this year. These new roles will be spread across three new fulfillment centers: one in Horn-Bad Meinberg, opening in late summer 2024; one in Erfurt, which opened in May 2024; and one in Großenkneten, which opened in August 2023.[1] With these new hires, Amazon will have more than 40,000 permanent employees in Germany, providing roles at all levels and in more than 100 German cities and municipalities across its business.[1]

The investment announcement follows Amazon's €7.8 billion AWS European Sovereign Cloud investment, which was announced last month. The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is a new, independent cloud for Europe, and its first AWS Region will launch in the state of Brandenburg by the end of 2025.[1]

"Germany is at the heart of innovation across Europe. AWS is more committed than ever to helping German customers lead and build new technologies and services using the wide variety of capabilities in the AWS Cloud, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics," said Stefan Hoechbauer, managing director for Germany and Europe at AWS.[1]

The significant investments by Amazon and AWS in Germany underscore the country's importance as a strategic hub for the companies' European operations. The investments are expected to drive economic growth, create thousands of new jobs, and further solidify Germany's position as a leading technology and innovation center in the region.[1]
