The Perform a quick format option will create a new file table, but will not fully overwrite or erase the volume. A quick format is much faster than a normal format, which fully erases any existing data on the volume.

If you don't see the drive listed on the top or an Initialize Disk windows appears, it probably means that the hard drive is new and has not yet been partitioned. Partitioning is something that must be done before a hard drive is formatted.

Drive letters are assigned during the Windows partitioning process but can easily be changed after the format is complete. You can change drive letters after the formatting process is done if you'd like.

Just as the warning says, all the information on this drive will be erased if you click OK. You can't cancel the format process halfway through and expect to have half of your data back. As soon as this starts, there's no going back. There's no reason for this to be scary but we do want you to understand the finality of a format.

You may notice that now that the format is complete, the volume label has changed to what you set it as (New Drive in our case) and the % Free is listed at 100%. There's a little overhead involved so don't worry if your drive isn't completely empty.

Would this work if I reformatted only my system drive (dropbox is synced to another drive) Reinstall Dropbox (latest) and point the sync directory to the old one?

I did this before on another PC and it never stops "indexing" the icon remains on sync with thousands of files but never really changes so I can't see if any new downloading files are actually being downloaded or not.

I bought a brand new 2T drive to backup my ReadyNAS for offsite storage. When I plug the drive in, the ReadyNAS does not recognize it and gives me no way to format it. It doesn't show up in the System->Volumes tab, or any place else on the UI that I can find. I tried to format it as a ExFAT on my Mac and when I plug it in it says "System: External storage device is connected but the file system is not recognized." but it *still* doesn't give me a way to format the drive! How can I format it on the ReadyNAS?

Thanks for the response, but there are several problems here. If the drive is completely new and has no filesystem on it, attaching it to the ReadyNAS via USB does not present the drive in any way for you to format it. You apparently have to format the new drive on a separate system (e.g. Linux machine or Mac) before you can attach it to the ReadyNAS.

Further, formating it to ext4 via Linux (e.g. Ubuntu) ultimately fails. While the drive shows up under System->Overview, backing up to it fails after a while. I get a hundred or so warnings about virus (usually in Junk mail folders on my IMAP server that is getting backed up), and a bunch of files appear to get copied, eventually the backup fails with a message such as:

I'm going to try again after reformating the drive through the ReadyNAS UI (click on the drive's gear, then Format-> EXT4). The last time I tried this, the format never completed, but it seems to this time so I'll see if formating it through the ReadyNAS UI fixes the read-only filesystem problem.

Thank you. I will try your suggestions. This HD has not been used from a previous Tablo. I am new to Tablo! The HD is an extra Western Digital 2TB external I had on hand. What I meant is, it was placed on the Tablo before any other connections were placed as instructed in the manual. I cleaned it up earlier and removed all my files(except the drivers) and am ready to dedicate it to this new Tablo. Will the new format take away the WD drivers and make it unusable on Windows in the future?

Yes, the drive will be formatted with the ext4 format which is not natively readable in Windows. It can be reformatted in the future if you no longer wish to use it on your Tablo and wish to use it in Windows again.

Try to insert the new drive alone on the unit and then partition he volume by going to the storage section, after this you will be able to create a jbod volume. Unless you are trying to create a RAID volume you can try this, hope it helps.

Is there some way to tell the NAS system to relabel the existing drives in the order that I want them? Currently my Volume 2 is in Bay 1 and my Volume 1 is in Bay 2 - I want the drive in Bay 1 to stay there and be called Volume 1, etc.

After many difficult hours messing about with settings and the rest, I have found a simple compromise. If you are using your EX4100 in JBOD and need to replace a drive, the formatting can be an issue.

As @djk44883 stated, not all playback devices can handle formatting the hard drive. If you have an android phone or tablet I would suggest using it to format your new hard drive. The last time I formatted a 5TB drive, I think it took less than 5 minutes to complete. The important part is that you must type in the word FORMAT exactly as directed when you receive the prompt.

I'm currently using a Windows 10 desktop PC, and I ran out of storage on my C drive. To upgrade my storage, I installed an old hard drive of mine in the desktop, which I would like to use as a D drive. When I browse its files, I can see that there's an existing installation of Windows on the drive. I don't care about any of the files on it; I just want to wipe the drive clean and start over. That said, when I try to format the drive I get an error saying that the drive is in use. According to Task Manager, I don't currently have anything accessing the drive. What's the easiest way to wipe the disk and start over?

The drive might be in use by Windows Defender or Windows Search Indexer. To see what is locking the drive try a utility such as LockHunter, which may be able to unlock the drive so that you can use Windows diskmgmt.msc or a third-party tool such as DiskGenius to format it.

Another option is to boot from USB drive, without mounting the HDD, and use tools on the boot drive, such as Ubuntu's Disk Utility, which comes with Ubuntu Live, or a tool such as Ultimate Boot CD, which includes a number of disk management tools.

In addition to File Explorer and Disk Management that has been mentioned above, DiskPart is another option you could try.Launch Command Prompt, enter diskpart > list disk > sel disk x (the number of the old disk you want to format) > clean. If you want to make the delete data unrecoverable, use "clean all" command instead (Check clean a hard drive in Windows 10 for more details).

Aside from the primary C drive (C:), you can also format an internal drive or an external hard drive. Your Windows hard drive may be partitioned into several different drives. Smaller internal drives with names like D, E, F, etc. are your internal drives. An external drive is hardware like a USB drive or another external storage device.

If you need to format a drive to use a different file system, you can quickly do that from the Windows Explorer screen. Just right-click on the drive and select Format. From there, you can select NTFS, FAT32, or exFAT.

On Windows, your primary hard drive or C drive (C:) is the internal hard disk where the operating system (OS) resides. You may also have additional internal drives to store more files on your computer. This happens when your disk is partitioned (separated) between the primary drive and additional internal drives.

An external hard drive is located outside of your computer, and it can be a flash drive (also called thumb drive or USB) or a larger drive that can contain either a solid-state drive (SSD) or hard disk drive (HDD).

With basic file security and support for files over 4 GB in size, NTFS is the best option when transferring large files. If you want to put a movie on a USB drive to play it on your TV, you should use NTFS. Also, NTFS lets you set helpful advanced permissions.

The steps to format external drives and flash drives (also called thumb drives and USB drives) are the same as formatting internal drives. That means that learning how to format an external hard drive is fairly straightforward.

Normal format (also called reformat): Erases your files and completely wipes the drive, making it much more difficult to recover. This is the best option if you want to sell or give away your computer or external storage device.

Start from scratch: If things are no longer working on your machine, you can format the drive and reinstall the OS to try to create a new computer environment. Make sure to back up the files you need (or clone your hard drive) before you start formatting.

Over time, your hard drive becomes cluttered with temporary files, cached data, duplicate files, apps you never use, and other junk files. All that clutter will slow down your computer and can cause crashes and freezes.

I'm used to be a beta tester for Arlo for years, so I think I'm fairly knowledgeable regarding the hardware. I had a flash drive in one of my base stations (VMB4000r3) for years with no problem until the flash drive failed a week ago (I think it was a heat problem). Both base stations have the latest firmware (1.20.3.0_4203_8008561).

Anyway, I tried an old 2 Gb flash drive and a new microsd card (64Gb with compatible card reader) to replace the old flash drive. But now I can not get the base station to format either the flash drive nor the microsd. Arlo Secure says "Requires formatting" even though both the flash drive and the microsd have already been formatted to FAT32 with the computer (used rufus.exe to format 64 Gb card).

Thanks Stephan: I also tried using a 32 GB flash drive, that I preformatted with Fat32 on the computer, with the exact same results as the other flash drive and microUSB card. But thank you for trying to help me. David

log into the base station that has the 32 GB microusb card, the devices page shows that the USB card needs to be formatted. This shows on every camera as an icon at the lower right hand portion. When I click on that icon, it takes me to a page that says that the USB drive is not formatted and do I want to format it. When I say format the USB drive, it comes back and says that it can't do it and that the USB drive requires formatting. So that has been my problem. However when I go to the base station device information and go to local storage, it shows that there are two devices: one of them says USB 1 requires formatting and this is the one that will not format and is causing the icon on the main device page. But there is another device that shows as ARLO and it shows as being ready. I think that is actually my microusb in the card reader. 0852c4b9a8
