Kalnasthi, a kingdom high above the clouds on a floating island, is like something out of a dream. A castle in the sky is the center of this city-sized kingdom, with the streets drawing intricate circles around it as a magical seal to keep the kingdom afloat. While it's been described as a veritable paradise, most of its residents are humble enough to state that it's perfectly imperfect. They're just simple Mothfolk, just everyday people who are living everyday lives. There are open markets and shop windows filled with all manner of goods.
Kalnasthi is located in a Demiplane called Pousarthron (or Devonia, depending on who you ask). This plane is mostly home to hexapod-like races, including a dwarf-centaur-like subrace where their lower body is similar to that of myriapods.** This dwarven race has an affinity for coal mining, and they've turned it into a profitable export to other planes where coal is beginning to make an appearance in technological advancements.
The Lepikari make up most of this kingdom's population. They are a people who value the arts and the visual representations of the performer's or artist's soul. What people create, perform, or invent plays a role in their religion, and they fully believe that their souls live on in their creations and passions. Through this, their souls have a way to return to the waking world, to be reincarnated so they can bring more beauty into this world. This has created some competition among the elite, but not enough to matter. Art is art, and even the smallest sketch can function as a beacon for the soul. So long as one creates something, they will be able to come back. If an infant dies, their parents will bury them with something they've made for the child to ensure the child's soul can return one day, such as a crocheted blanket or a doll.
Kalnasthi is too high above the world below for anyone to fly to and from it, so several portals will transport them to other cities and regions throughout Pousarthron. One portal leads to a crossroads pocket world that allows travel between the planes, but it rarely sees use; the other nations use the in-between more than the people of Kalnasthi. Their exports are common enough to not bother traveling to Toril or the Feywild, among other planes, very frequently for the sake of trade.
The city itself is modern enough that some homes and shops are powered by gas, but for the most part, the city's main power source is the wind turbines that dot the edges of the island. It's a city traveling through the sky; there's plenty of wind to be had...
*A/N: Pousarthron came from the Greek name for Arthropods. Arthron "joints" and Pous "foot". Iferous came from the geological era when insects were king, Carboniferous.
**Myriapods include millipedes and centipedes
