A bunting is any festive decorations made of fabric, or of plastic, paper or cardboard in imitation of fabric. Typical forms of buntings are strings of colorful, monochrome, beige triangular flags and lengths of fabric in the colors of national flags gathered and draped into swags or pleated into fan shapes.

The term bunting is also used to refer to a collection of flags, and particularly those of a ship.[7] The officer responsible for raising signals using flags is known as bunts, a term still used for a ship's communications officer.

For my wedding, I made a "Just Married" no sew bunting for our get-away photo. I have made this no sew bunting again for a reunion my friends and I had last summer (although, it was made with paper this time) and I plan to make another for my son's play area.

FEATURES

The indigo bunting averages ve and one-half inches in length (tail tip to bill tip in preserved specimen). The female has brown feathers. The male has brilliant blue feathers in breeding season and a mixture of brown and blue feathers the rest of the year.

The offseason, especially when the weather is cold, is a great time to develop the proper bunting technique. Practice can be done inside, with limited space, using only a bat (could be plastic) and a softer ball.

Adult male painted bunting upperparts are blue, with a lemon-green back, green wings, reddish rump, and red eye ring. Underparts are bright red. The female is green above and pale green below. First-year males look like females, but the green is much brighter and may have flecks of red and blue in it. The song is a soft, varied, musical warble. The call is a chip or chit.

As summer resident, rare in southwest Missouri, and accidental elsewhere. As a migrant, accidental. It is not abundant anywhere in the state. Male painted buntings are highly territorial and physically attack other males. This behavior makes them rather easy to trap, and illegal trade of these animals is one reason their populations have been declining. Habitat loss from human development is another reason for the decline. Internationally, they are ranked as Near Threatened.

This species, dismayingly, is trapped in large numbers in many parts of its range and sold as a cage bird, even though international laws ban the sale of wild-caught birds from country to country, and many countries (including ours) ban the sale of wild-caught birds in pet shops. Male painted buntings, especially, are targeted, and in Florida the species has declined as a result. Wildlife trafficking is a serious threat to many of the most beautiful species in the world, including many parrots; education, and political and social willpower is needed to end it.

DISTRIBUTION. During the 1987-1992 field work of the TBBA project, volunteers found single probable and possible breeding locations for Lazuli Bunting in the Panhandle and another probable location (latilong-quad 31097-B6) further south and east. Seyffert (2001) reports few breeding records for this bunting in Texas and describe it as a rare summer resident in the Panhandle where most nestings have occurred.

Most breeding of this species is found at low to mid-elevations of the Pacific Coast from British Columbia south to northern Baja California and east to western North Dakota and Colorado (Righter 1998, Sauer et al. 2005). This bunting winters in western Mexico from Sonora to Oaxaca (Howell and Webb 1995).

STATUS. Lazuli Bunting is a very rare breeding species in Texas, but an uncommon migrant through the Trans-Pecos, Panhandle and South Plains regions (Oberholser 1974, Lockwood and Freeman 2004). Data from 502 Breeding Bird Survey routes across western North America do not provide a statistically significant trend estimate for the past 4 decades, but suggest the population has been roughly stable over that period (Sauer et al. 2005). This suggests that this bunting will continue to be present in Texas during spring and fall for at least some years. Text by Robert C. Tweit (2006) e24fc04721
