Welcome to Bug TV! It's a show made for kindergarteners and anyone else who loves learning about insects. Our kindergarten students lost out on raising bugs in their classrooms in the spring of 2020 so my sons and I brought the bugs to them!
Welcome to Bug TV! It's a show made for kindergarteners and anyone else who loves learning about insects. Our kindergarten students lost out on raising bugs in their classrooms in the spring of 2020 so my sons and I brought the bugs to them!
Hype Video: The insects get delivered!
Episode 1: Meeting our three insect species and learning about what they need to survive.
Episode 2: Comparing and contrasting the larval stage of ladybugs and painted lady butterflies.
Check out the new theme song made with guitar & drums from our music teacher, Mr. Deaton!
Episode 3, PART 1: Understanding metamorphosis by reading about the life cycle of our painted lady butterflies. Be sure to go on and view part 2 of this episode. (We didn't know 'til now that YouTube videos are limited to 15 minutes per upload!)
Big thanks to Ms. Loud & Ms. Noonan who helped me get today's book and many more bug books from the Irving Library.
Episode 3, PART 2. We sing Caterpillar, Caterpillar and give the kindergarteners' their Insect Journal task.
Here are the lyrics to Episode 3's Caterpillar, Caterpillar should you want to sing along!
Irving's art teacher, Ms. Tague, made this creative caterpillar lesson that goes along with what we're learning about insects. Thanks, Ms. Tague and your awesome co-hosts!
Episode 4: Ladybug life cycle! Is this metamorphosis, too? We'll compare and contrast how ladybugs and caterpillars grow and change.
Mrs. Tague, our awesome art teacher, leads us in drawing ladybugs with help from her special co-hosts!
Episode 5: All about pupae! (Yeah, pupae is plural for pupa.) Check out how our ladybugs and caterpillars have changed. Plus, there's a thrilling pupa rescue!
Episode 6: The praying mantis episode. We finally learn about our third, thrilling insect by reading an awesome book.
Episode 7: The ladybugs have emerged from their pupa stage. We do some research to learn what they'll need to eat now that they're all grown up!
Episode 8: Remote learning got you feeling the need to move your body? Our special guest leads us in bug-inspired yoga. It's bug yoga! Or, maybe, boga!
Episode 9: It's the big release! We let the butterflies and ladybugs go now that they've completed metamorphosis and are now adults. Plus we'll talk about the term, life cycle, and sing a familiar-sounding song in celebration of introducing our insect friends into the wild. A special thanks to our music teacher, Mr. Deaton, for laying down the instruments! It's his second Bug TV contribution. Thank you so much, Mr. Deaton!
Episode 10: The praying mantises have started to emerge! We also learn about the term, entomologist, and read the amazing book, "The Bug Girl."
Episode 11: Part 1 of our visit with Dr. Gwen Pearson, professor of entomology at Purdue University. We learn about her job and begin to ask her kindergarteners' bug questions.
Bug TV Episode 12: Part 2 of our visit with Dr. Gwen. We ask Dr. Gwen the rest of the kindergarteners' bug questions, learn about the difference between insects and arachnids, and meet a leaf insect, more stick insects, and a beautiful tarantula. Hang on tight, bug lovers, it's our longest episode yet! (That's why there's a Bug TV first: an intermission!)
Episode 13: We remind viewers that science isn't just for a certain group of people, it's for everyone. Thus we get to know about some awesome entomologists of color and learn what kinds of insects they're interested in. Then we tune in for an episode of the game show, "Insect or Arachnid." Watch and play along!
Episode 14: In our final episode we celebrate some fans' cool bug-inspired projects, release the praying mantises with interesting results, and help viewers graduate from Bug TV by honing their powers of observation in order to go out in nature this summer and learn even more about bugs.
Summer Special! We've been observing tons of cool bugs this summer and compiling lots of footage that we're excited to share! Aquatic insects will be the focus of this Bug TV summer special. We'll wrap things up by learning how bugs play a major role in an ecosystem's food web.
Below is the insect journal kindergarteners are using in conjunction with Bug TV.
