Dr. Buchibabu Vicharapu is currently working as Associate Professor in the department of mechanical engineering at IIT Palakkad, Kerala, India, where he served as an Assistant Professor from 2020 Feb. to 2025 Jul. Prior to his joining at IIT Palakkad, he carriedout post-doctoral research work at  the Joining and Welding Research Institute (JWRI), Osaka University, Japan and Physical Metallurgical Laboratory (LAMEF), Brazil. He holds a Ph.D from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) with a research specialization broadly in the area of manufacturing. He feels fortunate enough to become a part of Prof. Amitava De's research group for conducting his doctoral research at IIT Bombay. He also got to work with metal joining group (MJG), Defence Metallurgical Laboratory (DMRL), Hyderabad for both doctoral and masters' research work under the supervision of 'Dr. G. Madhusudhan Reddy.

His research interests include the following: 

[1]. Additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) / Friction stir additive manufacturing (FSAM) 

[2]. Friction stir welding, and repairing techniques that include friction stir plug welding and friction hydro-pillar processing

[3]. Process modeling of additive manufacturing, welding, repairing processes using heat transfer and fluid flow models 

[4]. Process-property-structure correlations through a coupled experimental and numerical approaches
