But I’m a Cheerleader is a satirical comedy, set in a pastel-colored world of suburban ideals and repression. It follows Megan, a high school cheerleader who is sent to a conversion therapy camp called True Directions after her friends and family suspect she’s gay. Amidst the absurd “rehabilitation” exercises and rigid gender roles enforced by the camp’s leaders, Megan begins to question her identity and falls in love with another girl, Graham. Sharp, funny, and tender, the film uses campy humor and stylized visuals to explore themes of self-acceptance, conformity, and the courage to love authentically.
