All companies doing business within the City of Los Angeles need to obtain a Business Tax Registration Certificate from the city. It's easy to do online, or you may visit the Office of Finance to complete your application in person.

Once you've completed your application, you will be able to obtain your Business Tax Registration Certificate (BTRC). If you completed your application online, you will be issued a temporary BTRC that you may print and display at your business. Your permanent Certificate should arrive in the mail within four weeks.

You will need to use your BTRC number to pay your business taxes with the City of Los Angeles each year. You should receive a notice in December of each year with instructions on how to calculate and pay your taxes.

Due to a special business tax exemption, most new businesses do not need to pay business taxes for their first two years of operation. In addition, small businesses with fewer than $100,000 in receipts per year, as well as creative artists and non-profit/charitable organizations, may not need to pay business taxes. It is essential to complete your annual tax renewals on time each year in order to qualify for business tax exemptions. Visit the Office of Finance website for more information about available exemptions.

For generations, the world has come to Los Angeles to create the future and in turn has helped build one of the most diverse and forward-thinking cities in history. With instant name recognition around the globe, LA is known as a place where new ideas and fresh-thinking are as much a part of the landscape as our mountains, beaches, and unrivaled weather.

All individuals or entities conducting business activities within the City of Los Angeles are required to apply for and obtain a Business Tax Registration Certificate with the City of Los Angeles, Office of Finance. You may also have to register with other Federal, State, and Local government agencies depending on the structure and location of your business. Certain organizations, which are conducted solely for charitable or religious purposes, may be entitled to receive tax-exempt registration certificates upon application and qualification. The payment of tax is not required for engaging in a business activity when such payment of tax would be in violation of the Constitution of the United States or the Constitution of the State of California. Please refer to Sections 21.02, 21.22 and 21.49 of the Business Tax Ordinance for more detailed information.

The first year of new business activity in the City of Los Angeles is not exempt from taxation. The first year of taxes is paid in the second year when you renew your BTRC. This is referred to as the BACK TAX. Learn more about it here.

If your global gross receipts are under $100,000 and you renew on time, you are eligible for the Small Business Exemption. Please make sure to check the appropriate box on the Renewal Form. Learn more here.
