Welcome to the Congressional Debate page for the Brooklyn Debate League :)
We hope you come to enjoy this category and have many fun debates along with some interesting conversations.
The schedule for the month is shown on the left
Below are the bills to be debated on the following tournaments (Click on the box to view the doc)
We at the BDL feel that the best way to commemorate Black History Month is to teach our blossoming debaters rhetorical appeals using examples from greats.
An acronym that we will be using frequently at practice and in the beginning stages of understanding debate is CWDI which stands for Claim, Warrant, Data, and Impact. The PDF on the left will detail what each of these words mean.
The first step to a good speech is good research.
Use this PDF ( either print or digitally edit it) to help organize your prep and think of possible arguments that can be made.
If you click here, you will be able to edit the PDF as a digital worksheet
Once you have prepped some research and answered the questions for the guided prep sheet, it is time for you to start writing your speech.
The PDF on the left will give the time breakdown for the section of a speech. While the times and bullets provide a great guideline for beginners, many debaters diverge (move away) from this layout.
We encourage you to make your own style of speech once you are confident and comfortable :)
A piece of legislation that can be executed with federal power
Causes action
Becomes law and states abide by it
How to write about this type of legislation
Since this will lead to changes in the government, look up real world impacts
- Read which agencies are impacted by the bill
- How will the funding help/hurt Americans and/or the economy
A piece of legislation that cannot be acted out with federal power
Start a conversation on a topic
Encourage change with our words
Ex: School program changes
How to write about this type of legislation
Since we are encouraging a goal or value in government or foreign affairs, your speeches should be focused on the impacts of the governments support. (Is the support harmful or beneficial?)
This powerpoint will show you how to flow a round and how questions are asked in round. If you would like to flow the other speeches in the video click below.
This PDF will give you a detailed rundown on everything congress from sites to aid in research to procedures used in round.

(Although we have already debated SCS we hope that debaters feel more comfortable with their speeches and include more in round inserts such as clash or refutation)
