In Ado, a modern adaption of Shakepeare's Much Ado About Nothing, the director's (Dawn Monique Williams) vision was inspired by the playwright herself, the dearly departed Lavina Jadhwani, lounging on a chaise in her lush pj set and robe in joyful bliss (top left). With this photo, the director aimed to create a playful and ultra-feminine bridal bachlorette party in the beloved Hero's childhood bedroom.
Futhermore, the costume design concept aimed to illuminate the soft and delicate nature of quiet beauty and female friendship thru the characters' deepest and most cherished (yet unfulfilled) desires expressed in Act 4. From Hero's gentlewoman Margaret, she shares, "I dream of horses." So, the costume design featured red, sparkly cowgirl boots, that were a reminder of her "Aunty". To Ursula's fantasy of "hot coffee, first thing in the morning" and "sleeping in as late as I want," with a comfy burgendy, velvet lounge set and furry slippers. To bold patterns and gold/rhinestone accents to call to attention Beatrice's desire to be seen, heard and loved: "I am me and also I am more." And the unforgettable Hero who doesn't really know what she wants, but understands that she needs to "dream big and loud," so the costume design accentuated her sorrow and uncertainity with delicate shades of purple with lace and silk fabrics.
From these scripted moments, the costumes were able to partake in a harmonic intimacy and strength of character thru the use of a romantic color palette, luxurious fabrics, and charming floral and heart-shaped prints/patterns that, as Ursula shares, allow the ladies to "dream [their] wildest dreams tonight . . . (and) in the morning: [they] will know what to do."
