If I use auto-punch and set the red region, it does not record. I play the recording and when the play head reaches the red region no recording takes place. No blinking record button in the control bar.
I think I figured out what was happening. It appears I was "recording" (Press "R" key) instead of "playing" (Press ) when using manual punch in/out. When I simply played the track but tapped Ctrl-J to punch in/out I was able to record a take as shown in the book.
I think @verstaerker 's expections are reasonable. You should be able to enable punch-in, autolength on, set transport playing and take your time meandering across the studioscape to your midi-enabled CS80 and be able to capture your opus with confidence in your interpretation of the manual.

The basic principle is that you bunch holes in a piece of card, and then you feed it into the music box to make it play the notes you've punched into the card. Different variants exist with different numbers of notes - mine has a staggering 30 different nodes it can play!
The output from the program can (once printed to the correct size) then be cut out and pinned onto a piece of card for hole punching. I find paper clips work for this, but in future I might build myself an Arduino-powered device to punch holes for me.
While it's still a bit tedious to punch the holes, it's much easier be able to adapt a score in Musescore, export to MIDI, push it through MusicBoxConverter than doing lots of trial-and-error punching it directly unaided.

If you are recording into the Arrangement while the Punch-In switch is active, the metronome will only be audible after the punch-in point.
Then, just play back the midi for, say, the kick track (with the meta tracks also enabled), sending it to the OP-Z. The OP-Z will play back the kick track, with all your live tweaks intact, and you can record it.
Thanks Pat, yea I had gone through all those settings. In my case it seems to be what @chuckkahn said. My project relys on the the film option for perf slipping. Which has the unfortunate side effect of messing with the punch in tool.
