Bringhurst Math Olympiad (2026-27)

The Bringhurst Math Olympiad Program is sponsored by the Bringhurst PTO and supported by parent volunteers. It's designed for Bringhurst students in Grades 4–5 who enjoy math and want to build their problem-solving skills through challenging, creative problems.

Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS) is an international math problem-solving program with five monthly contests held November through March. Each contest has five problems and a 30-minute time limit. Contests are administered in person on campus.

Bringhurst students participate in MOEMS Elementary Division (Division E), which is designed for students in Grades 4–6. Although Bringhurst participation is limited to Grades 4–5, students will encounter problems that may extend beyond the standard grade-level curriculum and emphasize reasoning, strategy, and creative problem solving.

The Math Olympiad program aims to:

• Spark enthusiasm and a love for math

• Build problem-solving skills and strategies

• Introduce math concepts beyond the regular classroom curriculum

• Strengthen mathematical intuition, creativity, and logical thinking

• Help students approach challenging problems with confidence and persistence

• Give students the satisfaction of solving tough math problems

• The program is open to Bringhurst students in Grades 4–5, with priority given to these grades. Students in Grades 2–3 may participate if space is available, with 35 total spots.

• The program runs from September 2026 through March 2027. Students complete weekly assignments posted in Google Classroom, with parents assisting and supervising at home.

• Students participate in MOEMS contests in-person on the following dates at Lila Bringhurst Elementary.

  1. November 17, from 6:30–7:00 PM 

  2. December 8, from 6:30–7:00 PM  (School Choir Performance on 12/15)

  3. January 19, from 6:30–7:00 PM

  4. February 16, from 6:30–7:00 PM

  5. March 9, from 6:30–7:00 PM   (March 13-21 Spring Break) 

• Students must participate in all five tests, unless they have an unavoidable conflict.

• Contests are administered on campus under MOEMS guidelines. Students are expected to attend contests.

• The program is sponsored by the Bringhurst PTO.

Program Structure: Students practice past papers at home according to the assigned schedule, and take the official contest in-person at school.

Parent Support: Parents are expected to support their student by ensuring assignments are completed on time, submitted through Google Classroom, and kept on track with the program schedule.

Practice Effort: Students should make a genuine effort to complete each practice test before its solutions are released.

Contest Attendance: Students commit to participating in all five official contests, unless they have an unavoidable conflict.

Each monthly contest consists of:

5 problems · 30 minutes · 1 contest per month · 5 contests total

Results across the five contests determine individual and team recognition at the end of the MOEMS season.

The school score is based on the top 10 students' performance, with an individual component as well. Joining the official team means committing to the full season schedule and attending all official contests in person.

1. How are practice past papers released?
New past paper question sets come out on the scheduled dates, and all previously released sets stay available — similar to the Math Challenge format. We release one set of questions and solutions each time in Google Classroom (rather than all at once) to keep things simple and easy to follow.

2. What math level is required, and who can join?
Problems generally assume a Grade 4 level of math. Priority is given to Grades 4–5. Students in Grade 2 or 3 who already have the necessary skills are welcome to join if space is available.

3. Is there a selection process?

Yes — priority is given to students in Grades 4–5. Students in Grades 2–3 may join if space remains available, up to the 35-spot cap. Parents are encouraged to support and guide their child throughout. This isn't a math teaching class; we provide problems and solutions on a regular schedule.
