One of my favourite all time movies to watch non stop is Cinderella (1950). Enslaved by her evil stepmother and two jealous stepsisters, only to be seen in rags and stands no chance to attend a royal ball. When all seems lost and Cinderella is about to give up hope, her fairy godmother appears and transforms her into a royal desire. The one thing I love most about her transformation is her little black choker.

This is a reference to Queen Charlotte, played wonderfully in a greatly enhanced role by Golda Rosheuvel. The real historical Queen Charlotte has been rumored over the years to have had African ancestry, and while there is really not much evidence of this, it makes a great starting point for a reimagining of Regency England as a more diverse society in a contemporary way. There are some flaws with this approach to race, as detailed in this piece for the NYT by Salamishah Tillet, but while it is a bit shallow and puts the burden of racial issues on the black characters, it still results in a more representative show and allows some very talented actors to take on now-iconic roles that they might not have gotten in a more traditional casting method.

Keke Palmer has been cast as the first ever black Cinderella on Broadway. And it's not long until we'll see her name in lights on the Great White Way, as she'll be performing eight shows a week from 9 September.

The 25-year-old actress, who was the first black woman to play Cinderella on Broadway, spoke out against critics of Bailey's casting in Disney's upcoming live-action Little Mermaid adaptation on GMA's Strahan and Sara on Monday.

"What's up y'all, it's me, the black Cinderella," Palmer began. "And I know you're scared because Hollywood is making an effort to be more diverse in the people that they show on screen. But let me ask you this: why can't a mermaid be black? Why is that too unrealistic for you -- because you do know she's friends with a talking crab, and I know you're not the sharpest people, but crabs can't talk. In fact, the entire thing is fiction!"

"Yes. The original author of The Little Mermaid was Danish. Ariel...is a mermaid. She lives in an underwater kingdom in international waters and can legit swim wherever she wants (even though that often upsets King Triton, absolute zaddy)," Freeform wrote on Instagram. "But for the sake of argument, let's say that Ariel, too, is Danish. Danish mermaids can be black because Danish *people* can be black. Ariel can sneak up to the surface at any time with her pals Scuttle and the *ahem* Jamaican crab Sebastian (sorry, Flounder!) and keep that bronze base tight. Black Danish people, and this mer-folk, can also *genetically* (!!!) have red hair."

"But spoiler alert - bring it back to the top - the character of Ariel is a work of fiction," the post adds. "So after all this is said and done, and you still cannot get past the idea that choosing the incredible, sensational, highly-talented, gorgeous Halle Bailey is anything other than the INSPIRED casting that it is because she 'doesn't look like the cartoon one,' oh boy, do I have some news for you...about you."

That can be especially cruel for black girls, according to African American Shakespeare Company Executive Director Sherri Young, who's also directing the company's annual holiday show, Cinderella. So Young has remade this annual holiday comedy into a black-girl-positive version in which the ball gown is nice, but it's better for little girls to find their inner strength, prince or no prince.
