PRIVACY POLICY — BRIGHT ATLAS

Last updated: September 20, 2026

Bright Atlas ("we", "our", "the App") is an offline-first travel map for marking

places you have been to, places you want to visit, and private custom pins.

This policy explains what data the App handles, what we do not handle, and

where third-party services are involved.

The short version: your atlas data lives on your device. We do not run a

backend for syncing your places, do not maintain an account system, and do

not sell your data. The third parties that may process limited information

are Google (AdMob advertising), Google Play Billing or Apple In-App Purchase

(optional one-time Pro), and—only when you choose to use the street map or

place search—OpenStreetMap tile and Nominatim geocoding services.

2. INFORMATION YOU PROVIDE

When you use the App, you may enter the following into local storage. None

of this is transmitted to us.

  - Place marks — visited, wishlist, or currently there, for preset places

    and private custom pins

  - Custom places — name, coordinates, country/city attribution you choose

or that is resolved offline when you create the pin

  - Optional visit dates and birth year — used for timeline and age-based

    storytelling on device

  - Notes and photos — short text and images you attach from the camera or

photo picker; stored in the App's private storage

  - Settings — language, appearance, map skin, widget summary data (local)

This information is stored in the App's private sandbox on your device. We

do not have remote access to it.

3. INFORMATION COLLECTED AUTOMATICALLY

The App contains no first-party analytics or telemetry SDKs. Automatic

network activity is limited to ads, store purchase verification, and

optional map/search features you trigger.

3.1 Google Mobile Ads (AdMob)

On the free tier, the App may show native and interstitial ads. Ad serving

is handled by the Google Mobile Ads SDK. Google, as the processor for ad

delivery, may collect:

  - Advertising ID (Android Advertising ID / Apple advertising identifiers;

reset or limited via system settings)

  - Device information — model, manufacturer, OS version, screen size,

    locale, time zone

  - IP address, used for approximate geo-targeting and fraud prevention

  - Ad interaction events — impressions, clicks, and related events

  - Crash and diagnostics data from the SDK itself

Ad personalization may be on by default. You can opt out at any time via

your device settings (for example, Android: Settings → Google → Ads → Opt

out of Ads Personalization; iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Apple

Advertising / Tracking, depending on OS version). When opted out, Google

may still serve non-personalized ads.

Google's processing is governed by Google's Privacy Policy

(policies.google.com/privacy) and AdMob disclosures

(support.google.com/admob/answer/10113003).

3.2 Google Play Billing and Apple In-App Purchase

The optional one-time "Pro" upgrade is processed by Google Play Billing on

Android or Apple In-App Purchase on iOS. We do not see your card number,

full billing address, or financial account details. We receive only a

non-personal purchase receipt (product ID, purchase state, and related

store tokens) so that Pro features can be unlocked on this device.

  - Google Payments Privacy Notice:

    payments.google.com/payments/apis-secure/u/0/get_legal_document?ldo=0&ldt=privacynotice

  - Apple Privacy Policy: apple.com/legal/privacy/

3.3 Optional street map and place search

If you open the street-map view or use place search, the App requests

resources from third-party services:

  - Map tiles: tile.openstreetmap.org

  - Place search: nominatim.openstreetmap.org

Those requests may include your IP address, user agent, search text you

type, and map viewport parameters. This is used only for browsing and

picking places. The App does not require continuous GPS location

permission; coordinates come from your map selection or search results.

If you do not use street map or search, the main filled-country atlas can

work with locally packaged map data offline.

4. INFORMATION WE DO NOT COLLECT

For clarity, the App does NOT include:

  - Analytics SDKs (Firebase Analytics, Mixpanel, Amplitude, AppsFlyer,

    Adjust, etc.)

  - Crash reporting SDKs (Crashlytics, Sentry, Bugsnag, etc.)

  - Account creation or login

  - Server-side sync of your atlas to our servers

  - Social feed, follows, or public UGC upload

  - Continuous GPS trip tracking in the background

If this changes in a future version, we will update this policy and note

the change in the App's release notes.

5. HOW WE USE INFORMATION

Because we do not receive most of the information you enter, our use of

data is limited to:

  - Operating the App on your device — reading and writing local storage to

show your map, stats, achievements, timeline, and share images

  - Unlocking Pro features — verifying your one-time purchase through

Google Play or the App Store

  - Serving ads — through Google AdMob, governed by Google's policies and

    your advertising choices

  - Loading OSM tiles or search results — only when you use those features

We do not sell your atlas content, do not build sellable profiles from your

places, and do not enrich your local records with brokered third-party data.

6. LOCAL STORAGE, BACKUP, SHARE, AND RESTORE

The App stores records locally. Backup and compare export are manual:

  - Backups and compare files are produced on your device

  - They are not automatically uploaded to us

  - When you share a file or image (email, cloud drive, messaging, etc.),

it travels through the app or service you select; we do not see or

    store those copies

  - Restore happens entirely on the device

Deleting the App removes local data in the App's private storage. Files you

saved outside that area (Downloads, Photos, cloud drives) must be deleted

separately.

7. PERMISSIONS

  - Internet — ads, purchase verification, optional OSM tiles and search

  - Camera (optional) — take a photo to attach to a place note

  - Photo library / system photo picker (optional) — choose photos to

attach, or save a share image when you choose to save

On Android, photo selection prefers the system Photo Picker and does not

request broad media-library access. The App does not request continuous

location permission.

8. CHILDREN

The App is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not

knowingly collect personal information from children. If you are a parent

or guardian and believe your child has entered information into the App,

uninstalling the App removes that data from the device's private App

storage.

9. INTERNATIONAL DATA TRANSFERS

The App itself does not transfer your atlas data across borders because we

do not receive it. However:

  - AdMob may process advertising data in countries where Google operates

  - Google Play Billing and Apple IAP process purchase data per their

    regional practices

  - OSM / Nominatim process requests only when you use street map or search

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or

Switzerland, those providers rely on their own transfer mechanisms (such as

standard contractual clauses) as described in their policies.

10. YOUR RIGHTS

Because most of your data lives on your device, you can exercise most

rights directly:

  - Access — open the App to view your places and settings

  - Export — use in-App backup, share, or compare export

  - Correction — edit any record in the App

  - Deletion — delete records in the App, or uninstall the App to remove

    local private data

For data held by Google or Apple (advertising signals and purchase

history), use your Google or Apple account controls and device advertising

settings.

If you are in the EEA, UK, or California, you may have additional statutory

rights. Because we do not receive atlas personal data from the App, most of

those rights are exercised on device for local data, and through Google or

Apple for ad and purchase data. For other requests, contact us using the

details in Section 13.

11. DATA RETENTION

  - Local database and photos — retained until you delete them or uninstall

    the App

  - Exported backups and share images — retained only as long as you keep

the files; we do not retain copies

  - Advertising data — retained by Google per policies.google.com/privacy

  - Purchase receipts — retained on device as needed to verify Pro status,

and by Google or Apple per their retention practices

12. SECURITY

The App uses the platform private storage sandbox. Network traffic is

limited to:

  - Ad requests to Google AdMob

  - Billing verification with Google Play or Apple

  - Optional OSM tile and Nominatim requests you trigger

Protect your device with a screen lock and keep your OS up to date. No

method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee the

security of data handled by third parties outside our control.

13. CHANGES TO THIS POLICY

We may update this policy as the App evolves or as legal requirements

change. When we do, we will:

  - Update the "Last updated" date at the top

  - Note material changes in the App's release notes for the next version

Continued use of the App after a material change indicates acceptance of

the updated policy.
